System unusable due to graphic glitches

Post by Karlokick »

Dear all,

if this has been mentioned before, please refer me to the right topic. I'm running Qiana 17 (XFCE) on my computer and it ran smoothly and stable ever since it was introduced. Since three days however, I am experiencing graphic glitches that ultimately cause most programs to crash unexpectedly and without warning. It literally makes the system unusable, since I cannot make a backup every 10 seconds. How do I get to the bottom of this? There have been no installs, other than the usual updates. I tried to install and run KDE and va-driver with no results. Also downgrading NVIDIA drivers didn't help. Some data on my system:

NVidia latest drivers are 355.x I think.

Thanks, but I'm using the latest recommended driver for this distro. That is probably not causing this issue, otherwise this would have reported elsewhere. This driver worked well for some time without this problems...

"most programs to crash unexpectedly and without warning" The signature of chaos...see hardware. Overheating silicon is always popular. Borderline RAM becoming bad RAM happens often enough to be worth checking, as does a heatsink clamp coming loose. Optimistic overclocking? Try the failsafe defaults in the BIOS.

Thank you, my hunch is that overheating is not the problem, since I see glitches even at the startup window. I will do a thorough memory check, CPUBURN and a GPU Benchmark to see what happens and let you know the results. Any other idea how to check the hardware?

Edit: I really don't think that newby questions is the right forum for this. I am a linux user for +12 years and have been sporting Gentoo for a couple of years. I know my way around. However, I am at a loss at this.

So I can confirm that it is a hardware issue. After memory testing and CPU test was without incident. I installed a different Distro and still see the same issue.

Results so far

Memtest86 - no errors reported after several runs
changed graphic card - still the same issues
changed hard disk - still the same issues
Different operation systems - still the same issues
no overheating problems

I really have a hard time figuring this out. Any ideas?

This reminds me of a joke:

A guy goes to the doctor and says:
When I touch my head it hurt, When I touch my arms it hurt, when I touch my belly it hurt, what is wrong with me doctorÉ
The doctor look the guy in is eyes and said:
Your finger is broken...

This is happening to me too. Can someone please give me a hint how to run memtest86+ as I see it is installed but I don't know how
to access it.

So, since my warranty has not yet expired, I returned the Computer to the manufacturer. Turns out my CPU was broken. They replaced it and I don't have these issues anymore.
