Mint doesn't like me anymore :(

Post by stoswald »

I've had a few issues this past 6 months with Cinnamon, that made me swap to Mate. Now I've updated to Mate Rosa, I find
Updating the AMD Graphics Drivers doesn't work. I followed the AMD instructions and uninstalled the old driver and had to do reinstall as it gave me a black screen.
On a fresh install, I try again. this time I follow the instructions from AMD and guess what. The file I downloaded "Cannot be found". I then tried a You Tube Video from Scroogsy as this is what I did before on 17.2 & low behold I get the same issue.

My kids are also disappointed with the quality of games on Linux and I agree with others on here that a lot of games manufacturers are not porting the games correct. However explaining that to a 9 yr old, is very hard when all he want to do is play games he can't!

I'm running an AMD A8 7600 that is 6 mths old.

you may be best re-installing - again - with Mint mate 17.0 Qiana

there are plenty of Games on Linux that a 9 yo would like to play,
you will have to steer him away from the bigger windows based games
and more into the available Linux games.

look in the games area in Software Manager.

You don't have to choose between Linux and Windows. Why limit your options when you can have both?

There are now well over a thousand Steam games that run on Linux. You might look into those.

Thanks, will do. He loves World of Thunder & Empire Total War, which both need the AMD Driver to be installed to play properly. I'll go back to Rafela and see if I can get AMD Crimson Driver to install, if not I'll have to get a copy of W10. My old PC had an OEM version of W7, which I can't move from machine to machine :(

I have Empire Total War and play it through Steam and it works perfectly. I'm using Cinnamon though.

I don't have the best computer in the world, no idea how it compares to yours either:

Dual boot Windows on that machine and make the kids happy again.

If you still have the W7 key, you may be able to do a new W10 install with the old W7 key. Give it a try. MS now allows to install 10 using a 7 or 8.1 key without having to do the upgrade.

As there isn't much between our 2 PC's in windozland, I think your advantage is the Nvidia GPU

Empire TW has lines at the top and bottom of UI screen and then random lines in the gameplay on the pre installed drivers, these go on when the AMD drivers are installed.
War Thunder refuses to start with the pre installed drivers, works fine with the AMD drivers installed. I have 12 other Steam Games that cannot play in Linux,

I could use Wine & Play on Linux, or simply blow £100 on W10 and spend the rest of the week installing MS updates.
The latter has advantages for me - I can use Office 2010 & PSE10 which I already own & don't run via wine

With a machine only 6 months old, you might have good results with the newer kernels.
Mint 18.2 Cinnamon, Quad core AMD A8-3870 with Radeon HD Graphics 6550D, 8GB DDR3, Ralink RT2561/RT61 802.11g PCI
Linux Linx 2018

I use WPS Office as my office suite, looks like MS Office and works VERY well with their formats.

I've never used the onboard graphics card in my computer but I doubt it would be able to play any games on it.

Can't you just buy a new graphics card for that amount of money, I mean they're really easy to install. Seems to me that the reason you can't play games isn't really Linux but the graphics card you have. These are all the games I have installed and they all play perfectly fine, albeit a couple of them I have to turn down the graphics a bit as they can be a bit choppy.

I don't know if this person's suggestion will help or not, but worth considering...
Updated bios on Gigabyte board to latest ver. (F8) and Mint 17.1 loads and installs ok. Just letting anybody know if they have a Gigabyte Kaveri board to update the bios

I don't think it will, the current Bios works fine and (a bit like Linux) if it isn't broke...

According to AMD the preferred is a Radeon R7 240

Dual-graphics combinations for 7000-series "Kaveri" APUs
AMD currently recommends the following graphics cards for Ax-7000 series APUs:
Processor APU graphics Radeon R7 240 Radeon R7 250
AMD A8-7600 Radeon R7 +
AMD A10-7700K Radeon R7 +
AMD A10-78xx Radeon R7 +
Kaveri launch documentation stated that the APUs support Radeon R7 series cards with DDR3 memory under Windows 7, Windows 8 and Linux operating systems. Current list of confirmed working cards includes Radeon R7 240 and R7 250 GPUs, either with DDR3 or GDDR5 memory. Be aware that the Sapphire R7 250 Ultimate card is based on a different graphics core than other R7 250 products, and it is not supported. AMD R7 250X cards are rebranded HD 77xxx series cards, and they do not support dual graphics mode with the Kaveri A6 Series, A8 Series and A10 Series APUs. Radeon R7 260X is not supported either.

Looks like I'll be getting an R7 240 in the new year.

There is another way which it has always worked for me. Install W7 and use the phone option for verification.
