AMD or Nvidia for Linux Mint

Post by mattrixx » Fri Jan 01, 2016 1:51 pm

I`m about to purchase one of two discrete Video Cards for a "Dual Boot" (Win7/Mint17) rig of mine.
I have been using the integrated graphics of an Intel Core i-7 4790 for my graphics thus far, which has worked well for this non gamer in both Windows and MINT!
The reason I'm getting a discrete video card is I now need to power a new 27" Asus IPS Monitor:

with a default resolution of 2560x1440 using Display Port. My problem is however, my Gigabyte MB has NO on board Display Port provision!

My question then is this: Which video card (AMD or Nvidia) would be the best choice for Linux Mint 17?

I`m considering either of these two cards:

OR this Nvidia card:

Nvidia generally supports its video cards with Linux drivers for a much longer period than AMD. So for the long run, I advise to buy Nvidia.

Hi mattrixx,

Why not use HDMI instead of DisplayPort?

If you do still need to buy a discrete card, while graphics card brand choice is very subjective, my current personal preference would be to go with NVIDIA. Drivers seem more mature, and better supported.

David

PS: If stay with integrated GPU, for listed display resolution, make sure to buy an HDMI 1.4 (or above) lead.

As I understand it, HDMI (1.4) will not support 2560x1440 resolution at 60Hz?

As a NON gamer, I`m more interested in Mint`s "native" drivers and compatibility more so than any proprietary driver. I just need a good solid graphics compatibility with my Dual Boot system.
I think I have read some horror stories in the past about either AMD or Nvidia proprietary drivers and such. Hopefully these have been resolved by now?

Apologies for late reply.

Looking on the Intel specifications web-page for your CPU, notice it lists 4096x2304@24Hz as the maximum for HDMI 1.4, wonder what Hz 2560x1440 would be displayed at?
How did you proceed in the end? Hope everything went well for you.

As someone who has ran both... I would second NVIDIA.

I only play games on occasion so I understand where you are coming from there. However, NVIDIA does tend to have better performance than AMD gaming as well. AMD ran just fine but I ran into more issues with them than I did NVIDIA. I also agree that AMD seems to quit supporting their cards a bit early. I use TeamViewer as remote support for my PC's and my families PC's and AMD had a weird issue where it would not update the display.

Just my two cents but until I see reviews online stating AMD has much improved it will be NVIDIA all the way!

3rd for Nvidia.

My PC has Nvidia and gets the proprietary driver.

Wife's PC has AMD and get the Noveau driver, too many headaches with proprietary driver on that machine. I know, it used to be mine.
Using Mint since 2008
*Mint 18.2 KDE
*ASUS 970 PRO GAMING/AURA AM3+ AMD 970 + SB 950 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1
*AMD FX-8370 with AMD Wraith cooler Vishera 8-Core 4.0 GHz (4.3 GHz Turbo)
*G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB DDR3 SDRAM
*nVIDIA GEFORCE GT 610 2GB

i7-4790 has the the HD4600 graphics. According to Intel, HD4600 can output 26560x1440p @ 60Hz. You don't need a dedicated card in my opinion. Have you bought the monitor yet and have you tried the HDMI connection?
