Slow computer and slow internet

Post by theheerenhouse »

Several months ago I installed Linux Mint 17.2 alongside Windows and it worked fine. (did all the recommended improvements). I'm still in dual-mode.
However lately I noticed that my computer has slowed down significantly and now to the point it is becoming a nuisance.
Because I moved one floor down my internet went from wired to wireless.
The speedtest that I just did gave: download 4.45Mb, upload 0.73Mb. (I live in Mexico)

Any suggestions for improving computer speed?

My computer info is:

Some things you might try:

1. Upgrade to Mint 17.3. Its newer Cinnamon version is faster and some memory leaks have been fixed.
Upgrade like this:
Launch Update Manager. In the panel of Update Manager: Edit - Upgrade to Linux Mint 17.3 Rosa.

2. Apply these safe speed tweaks:

3. Disable hardware acceleration in Firefox: ... in-Firefox
(item 7, left column)

And in Chrome / Chromium as well: ... d-Chromium
(item 9, right column)

4. Optimize your wireless network: it should be secured with WPA2 Personal with "AES only", the SSID (network name) should be visible (not hidden) and it should broadcast on the optimal channel for it: ... st-channel
(item 1, left column)

5. Try if it helps when you disable IPv6: ... onnection-
(item 8, right column)

Desgewenst heb ik diezelfde handleidingen ook voor je in het Nederlands (handiger, als je een Nederlandstalig systeem hebt). :)

If you went from wired connection to wireless, that can slow you down considerably, even with good signal from your wireless router. 802.11n maximum is only 75MB/s vs. 100MB/s or 1000MB/s maximum for wired Ethernet connection. Also you may experience interference from cordless phones, cell phones, and microwave ovens which would slow your connection. If you have to share the wireless connection with other devices, this can also slow down your connection.

Thank you my loyal Linux supporter!

4. I have no access to the router which is in the rental upstairs - will move again in 2 months time and will have my own router.
5. check mark

Geef het nu gewoon een weekje om te zien of er inderdaad verbetering is.

muchas gracias!
