french accents on skype

Post by Palamas »

Hi, just installed Linux Mint on a laptop.
How can i type French accents on skype for Linux Mint on an American keyboard laptop?
Unicode works very well in the word processor, but not in skype.
Like é, è, etc.
What method do you suggest? I have tried several things, but nothing seems to work.
I teach French to students on skype, so i really need these accents.
Thanks, I would really appreciate your input, already spent a lot of time on this with no result.

In mint 13 there is a Character Map in the menu under Accesories
You can just pick up the è é á ç like this and drop it in skype.
I am in NZ and connect with a friend in France most days and that is how I do it.
I have not been able to find the Character Map in MInt 17...
Good luck, regards,Johanna

Why not install a French keyboard and switch between it and English as need be?

From the Mint menu search for "Keyboard Input Methods"
Under the "Input Method" tab add a French keyboard.

Now you should be able to switch between English and French keyboards by pressing Alt + Space on the keyboard (while using Skype, for example)

At least, that's how I switch between English, Spanish and Japanese.

Set a Compose Key and use the key sequence -

1. Compose Key
2. Select accent from keyboard
3. Select letter from keyboard

The Compose Key is configured in System Settings, Hardware, Keyboard, Layouts, Options, Position of Compose key.

I use the Caps Lock key as a Compose key but you can select any other key.

Now you can easily type é, è, ç, ñ, ô, ü, ö, ä, etc

The keymap is invoked by the command "gucharmap" and should appear in your accessories menu as Character Map. If it is not present in Linux Mint 17.3, you can now easily add it to your main menu.
Linux Mint 19.3 Cinnamon - 64bit
