VPN on Linux ... Good or Bad?

Post by gael33 »

Hi, I was offered a PureVPN life-time licence, installed PureVPN on my Linux Mint Cinnamon 17.3 computer. The rather long-winded instructions gave me a Gateway Address ny1-ovpn.purevpn.net. The vpn connects okay but being inquisitive I wondered if there was an Gateway list of addresses that would inform me where my Gateway address was taking me. A list of Gateway addresses would be helpful.
Can anyone point this noobie in the right direction please?

A VPN is good at Encrypting your internet connection however websites can tell if you are connected to the VPN http://iphub.info/

depending on your needs or wants a VPN may or may not make sense

I'm really, really new to using a VPN and admit I don't really understand (except for security) the reason to use a VPN.
I do communicate with friends and family all over the globe and must admit that because of the threat of listening ears like
NSA, MI6 and other such like organisations, I am always aware of what conversations to cover. Not that I or my friends would be a threat to
anyone, not at all. My biggest reason is to stop viruses and dangerous malware from infecting my computer and me passing it on to others.
Since I wrote my original posting I have been reading up on VPN usage and so I guess that with time and a little effort I will gain enough
knowledge to feel confident using my newly acquired toy, although it's not so easy when your nearly 70. :)

Thanks for your reply.

VPN won't do squat in that case, if you visit dodgy sites, open dodgy links or download willy nilly then a VPN is as much use as a chocolate teapot :-) The best insurance against malware etc is YOU adopting sensible computing habits, Only install from trusted sources, don't download anything if you don't trust the source or it looks a bit dodgy, don't click links randomly, it's common sesne more than anything and after a while becomes second nature

Have a browse through these, the subject of malware and virus on linux comes up quite often, there's plenty of links within these threads that are handy to read too
