I think after the new forum went online as HTTPS the advice from Mint developers was that they would prefer it if people used HTTPS addresses for feeding avatars and other images.
Mint 17.3 x64 Cinnamon - Rosa
When stating what version of Mint you are using remember to include the "Edition". Is it "Cinnamon", "Mate", "KDE" or "XFCE"? This helps others help you.

I think both the https and http of postimg.org direct to the same place. Is it important to use https in this scenario?

It's just important to use the https address pointing to your image when you set it up in your account. For example I use https://imgur.com/ to feed my avatar to Mint Forums. Once I uploaded the image to imgur I then had two url options to use to enter into my Mint account for the avatar:
1) http://imgur.com/aUkMdT5
2) https://i.imgur.com/aUkMdT5.png
Obviously I chose the second option.
If you want to see where other users are hosting their avatar images from then (assuming you are using Firefox) do the following:
1) Right click on the user's avatar and select "Copy Image Location".
2) Click the "New Tab" plus sign (+) to open a new tab in Firefox.
3) Right click in the address bar of the new tab and select "Paste & Go". Then you can see where the avatar is being hosted from.
None of this is critical. It was just a preference expressed by Mint at some point in the Mint blog.
