[SOLVED]No sound on Linux Mint 17.3

I've just installed Linux Mint 17.3 on a new computer. When I noticed that there wasn't any sound, I went to the sound settings and noticed the "play sound through" box was completely empty. There isn't even a default audio option. After trying many options on different websites and having them not work, here is my info:

inxi -A
Audio: Card-1 NVIDIA Device 0fbc driver: snd_hda_intel
Card-2 Intel Sunrise Point-H HD Audio driver: snd_hda_intel
Sound: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture v: k3.19.0-32-generic

aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
Subdevices: 0/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 7: HDMI 1 [HDMI 1]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

Being fairly new to Linux I'm not quite sure what all of that means, but other websites had me run those two commands. Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction. Thanks.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can get my sound to work?

Hi, I have a similary problem, but the yours sounds quite simple. First you could remove two sound packets and then install it over again with these commands:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove pulseaudio
sudo apt-get remove alsa-utils
sudo apt-get install alsa-utils
sudo apt-get install pulseaudio
reboot your system and check out it works fine. Otherwise, try to delete these packets through --purge command.

Geetings! I've some ideas and might be able to help. First, i need to know what mint-spin (Cinnamon, Mate, KDE, XFCE) you've installed. If you're not sure, just run the "inxi -F" command in a terminal window and copy/paste the output into a "Code"-box in your reply. Thanks.
I am running Linux Mint 17.3 Cinnamon. I have found that by upgrading the kernel to 4.2.5 or higher the audio works, but then my wifi driver I built no longer does. I guess I get to choose between internet and sound. I'm sure there's a solution, I just dont know what it is.

I tried all of the above suggestions and it said it was successful, but it still doesnt find my audio card.

Problem solved!! I went to this link: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/UpgradingAlsa/DKMS
and downloaded/installed the correct files, reboot. Everything works now.
