Post by yigit »

hello everybody.

now i am running 32 bit mint cinnamon on my desktop i bought 5 years ago, specs: intel dual core e5500 2 gb of ram and intel g41 graphics card..

my question is: if i install 2 gb of ram, can i install 64 bit version of linux mint on this machine, do the cpu and 4 gb of ram support 64 bit linux os?

thanks in advance

Yes, you can, and you could with 2G as well. It's not hugely important with 2G but anything above 1G (or 896M, with standard kernels) benefits already somewhat from a 64-bit OS.

The E5500 CPU is a 64 bit CPU so it will support a 64 bit OS regardless of the amount of RAM in the system. For more detailed information about the CPU see here.

64 bit is the future-safe variant.

Should a use the service of an English correction reader? But luckily others are at least able to guess, what I should have written.

Cosmo - Wasn't trying to be critical my friend - just to clarify. ...but it you want a proofreader (not merely a spell checker), this is an English proofreader addon for FireFox! <This is not an endorsement as I have never tired it!>

Best,

No no, Reorx, I didn't understand it as criticism. My reaction was merely a self knowledge, that my English knowledge is far from the point, where I wanted to be. I rely very much to the English spell-checker inside FF, but obviously the checker cannot show me errors like in this case (save <=> safe), as both are syntactically correct. So: no red underline -> no hint about a writing error (and using something like suggested [language-tool would be another option] would really cost too much time.) - That means, corrections as yours are welcome on my side, as they help me to learn (at least I hope so). :D

thank you very much for your replies, i have always thought that at least 4 gb of ram is needed to install 64 bit os and a modern cpu like core i3 or i5...

i will try to install 64 bit mint - thanks

Data width 64 bit

In the future, more applications will be 64 bit only and with 64, using multilib, you can run both 32 and 64 bit software. Currently, Google Chrome has already dropped 32 bit support.
