okay the first two sets of codes are from working machines i don't really want to change anything on them the last one is the problem machine, id like to have the i5 machine up and running but without messing up the other two in the process.

what machines would you like these ran on? the netbook and laptop will be quick and easy if needed desktop might take half hour of resets.

CODE: SELECT ALL
egrep -w 'RELEASE|CODENAME|EDITION|DESKTOP|TOOLKIT' /etc/linuxmint/info

CODE: SELECT ALL
inxi -r

The desktop results look good? if that's not the reason i'm having issues?

The bios on desktop is uefi but it lets me boot in legacy.
(the Xfce install before gave me the option to boot in legacy or uefi in the boot menu this one just offers legacy)

Could it be one of the settings in bios?
it's a Asus motherboard model# P8Z77-V LX2

UEFI or Legacy are not relevant to a graphics problem.

okay so the problem is

Display Server: X.Org 1.17.1 drivers: nouveau (unloaded: fbdev, vesa)
Resolution: 1920x1080@60.0hz
GLX Renderer: Gallium 0.4 on NVE6 GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 10.5.9

doesn't work with GTX 660 and I need to find a open source driver what supports it and the other two computers (if that exists)?

Mesa 11.2.2 Release Notes / May 9, 2016 is out could upgrading to that help things?
or
https://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/ ?

There's a list of Nouveau Drviers in the software manager could it be a case of install some and try till I hit the one that works? it wont mess up my Intel or AMD GPU will it? because this is limited to Nvidia right?

got an idea going to try and boot again go to system setting and driver manager and see if there's a Nouveau for me on desktop.
learning all sorts thanks guys like the 3 different types of open source drivers now AMD/Intell/Nvidia its clear I already have all 3 types installed as it uses Intell for laptop Amd for netbook and attempts to use Nvidia(nouveau) for desktop

There are no other open source drivers for AMD/Intell/Nvidia graphics.

Anything listed in driver manager is going to be proprietary.

You'll never guess what the problem was.....a mouse....I switched to a old ball mouse and problems gone...there was never anything wrong with graphics....I've had past issues in windows with it making speakers buzz on movement glad I didn't install much as I've reinstalled and wow was it fast on desktop had KDE fully installed in less than 10mins poor netbook takes about a hour lol

Avoid madcat mice like the plague it's probably worth a sticky post from a mod as I can't be the first person with this problem.

well that issue is fixed but still have a crash issue .... working on now....

thanks for all your help, I have given up for some reason desktop just doesn't like Linux it's powerful wish it did....there must be something what Linux disagrees with but no idea what for now, ill just stick to the laptop and netbook.
