Flickering square around the mouse in Mint 17 Cinnamon

Post by blackoutworm »

Hi there guys.
There's a flickering square around the mouse whenever I move the mouse. The square seems to be from the desktop background.
This is super annoying.
If there is a fix, how do I fix it?

Probably a driver issue, you may try kernel 4.2 or 4.4:
see Update Manager > View > Linux kernels > select kernel, install then reboot

Thanks. Any version in particular?
There are like a ton of v4.2 and 3 of v4.4. Are they all stable, or what?
And there are no description about the kernel and not change log describing what's new in each version.
I think they should have that. Because that's kinda important.

EDIT: Tried one 4.2 kernel and one 4.4 kernel now. Still flickering.
I should also mention, I've had this problem with Mint and Cinnamon before on a different computer.
So I doubt it's a driver issue.
There's also the audio glitching issue where the audio glitches out once every minute or so. But that's a different thing, so not to get off topic.

I'd bet it's most likely drivers. Load the driver and any kernel mods for your system and see what happens.

You apparently have an on-chip video controller and your at it's mercy.

One thing I would suggest, create a partition a ~28G partition as /. Partition the rest as /Home.
When the system fails, reinstall and use the exact same username and all your 'stuff' comes back to you.

Okay so this PC has an Intel HD 5500 graphics card.
The other PC has a 2 Nvidia GTX 980 cards.
Same flickering issue.

Are you using the fb driver on both systems?

First I would try changing the screen resolution, then I would load the latest driver for each video GPU...and, unfortunately, I would try another Linux distro...

Not gonna try a differnet distro.
It's not that annoying.
What do you mean by fb driver?
On my Nvidia pc, there are a few drivers available.
On this one, none at all.
I can't even find an Intel Graphics HD 5500 driver for linux.

fb is Frame Buffer, a generic video driver that does little more than allow the screen to paint.

I looked on Intel's web site and they had NO linux drivers at all.
