I have lost wi fi & all options...help please
I am running Linux mint mate 17.3. Today I removed the cmos battery from my compaq presario cq60 laptop. I put it back in, and after booting it up, I have no wi fi options. The usual options of what internet you want to connect to, are not there.
The laptop is running well on wired internet, but no wi fi
I did the rfkill list all command, and it came back saying soft blocked no, hard blocked yes. I have since tried a thousand things, but i am not knowledgeable to be able to get the wi fi working again
If anyone can help me, I shall be most grateful

Assuming wifi is built-in, is there an option to enable it in bios?
or if it's a usb device, does the terminal command

lsusb
list it?Re: I have lost wi fi & all options...help please
did you push your wifi button on your laptop to OFF/ON ???
Re: I have lost wi fi & all options...help please
If this is on about half of the laptops built, there might be a very tiny switch on the side (either) or the front of the base of the laptop.
If there is, the switch may have been bumped to the off position. I have found this switch on Dell, HP, Samsung and Toshiba computers. Personally I like them as every one that I have bought that have them work.

Re: I have lost wi fi & all options...help please
Others have a key combination that toggle the WIFI like FN+F2.
Re: I have lost wi fi & all options...help please
There is an indicator light top-center on your keyboard. When the wifi is off the light is amber.
On is blue. The switch for wifi is next to the light.
Is the wifi icon still in the panel?
If so, you ma be able to right click on it and click on "nable wifi".

You may wish to check in your CMOS settings (BIOS) if your networking or WIFI is enabled at that level. Removing the CMOS battery would have cleared all settings in there, and it could well have turned WIFI off by default. Another thing to check is to make sure your clock & date are set correctly. Although that shouldn't affect your ability to connect, it may cause problems with some websites once you are connected. I think most Compaq systems use F2 during POST to get into the BIOS settings, but I'm not familiar with that specific model.

Even though i know little about computers, i also believe the answer to this is in the BIOS. I have been in there several times, but i cant see anything that resembles turning wi-fi on, or even going back to default factory settingsralplpcr wrote:You may wish to check in your CMOS settings (BIOS) if your networking or WIFI is enabled at that level. It is hardware blocked, There's some sort of hardware switch that needs to be toggled like the Fn-F2 key.

You may try
menu
control center
network connections
and check if your router is there
if it is highlight it and check if the enable wifi will work then

remove the battery again and leave it out for 2 minutes (completely turn off the laptop first) after replacing the battery go back to your bios and set time and date if needed and look for something like load setup defaults save & exit
does it work with a live distro?
did you somehow maybe put the battery in backwards?

Re: I have lost wi fi & all options...help please
if it doesn't run with a live distro then this is an issue for the hardware support of your laptop manufacturer. you'll need to go there or search google for something like "removed cmos batter from laptop and now wifi is gone"
everything should be in bios
