<SOLVED> Mouse stuttering or lagging, help please.

Post by SweetBearCub » Sat Oct 29, 2016 10:17 am

Work-around found! See the last post of this thread for the details.

Greetings.

I have a fresh full disk encrypted install of Linux Mint 18 Mate 64-bit on an Acer E5-575G-53VG laptop, with the "install third-party software" option checked during the install process. (i5-6200U, 256 GB SSD, Nvidia 940MX, etc)

After logging into my user, the touchpad is quite smooth and responsive. However, within a short period of time - I'd say less than a minute - Even while just sitting at the desktop - The mouse will begin to skip/stutter/lag. More specifically, when I move my finger along the touchpad, instead of the on-screen cursor smoothly updating in time with my finger movements, it will jerkily move as if I am making small and short inputs in the direction I want it to go. It also will not cover the same on-screen distance as it would when the system was first logged on to, requiring a lot of very frustrating input to navigate to options. Also, I find that in a few cases, I also had to click on things more than once to activate or toggle them, which should not be the case.

Any help would be appreciated.

Is the problem reproducible on the live system?

Yes, I was able to reproduce the problem on a reboot with the live environment executing from the USB flash drive.

Just as before, the system was fine initially, and then some short amount of time later, no more than a minute, the same mouse problems occurred.

I should note that the live boot was as "clean" as I could make it in that while my wireless card was recognized, I chose not to log onto any network.

As requested, I downloaded the Antergos distro and tried it as a live USB environment to see if the problem would be duplicated.

Sadly, the same issue was still present.

Seems to be a hardware problem.

What happens if you use an external mouse and disable the touchpad?

When I plug in an external USB mouse, that mouse works fine.

The touchpad remains active (almost like having 2 mice plugged into a desktop), and still shows the issues.

It should be stated that Windows 10 works flawlessly with the touchpad.

Download the ISO file for Mint 17 or Mint 17.1. Both come with kernel 3.13. As you see the problem also in the live system this should give you an impression if the problem does also apply with the older (not outdated) kernel.

The Linux Mint MATE 17.1 64-bit Live USB seems not to have the touchpad issues.

I have no idea how to do that.

Am partially sleep deprived, that may be clouding my limited Linux knowledge. (Trying to quit smoking...)

See the post above this one - Linux Mint 17.1 seems not to exhibit the touchpad issues.

Code: Select all

sudo rmmod psmouse

Result:

rmmod: ERROR: Module psmouse is not currently loaded
Should I continue with the 2nd and 3rd commands?

Several came up for that search, but only 1 shows anything under the "Installed Version" column.

1.8.2-1ubuntu3

Found package that met the search criteria and had an installed version. Marked for removal, applied. Marked for installation, applied. Closed synaptic and restarted the laptop.

No change.

the only thing i can add is did you try this?

Code: Select all

xset m default
other than that, if you say that the same thing happens with other live distros then some updated software is not so compatible with your laptop in debian or arch distros. did you install any drivers with the driver manager? if you see any recommended selections you can install them and reboot. search your menu for driver manager

There was no change in trackpad behavior after I ran the "xset m default".

I have not specifically installed anything that would show in the driver manager, anything there is the default install choice, or the product of a system update.

When I opened the driver manager, here is what I saw: http://i.imgur.com/1zRsSq1.jpg
