Creating website URL shortcut on desktop

Post by Bob Deb »

Hi,
An absolute newbie to Linux - downloaded Sarah with Cinnamon 30 (32 bit) interface. Would like to create a desktop shortcut to a website URL (https://lastpass.com/index) to facilitate login direct from the desktop. Is it possible to do this, and where would I find the procedure for doing so? Currently I am having to open Firefox browser and then open URL via "Favorites". Would greatly appreciate any assistance anyone can offer. Have entered "desktop shortcut URL" with minor variations into forum search engine without any results. Many thanks - Bob Deb.

Right click on the desktop, then click "Create a new launcher here." Name it whatever you like. For the command, use: firefox https://lastpass.com/index. Add a comment if you like. Click OK, and you are done.

Sincere thanks - I was omitting "firefox" from the launch command. So... my question #1 has been speedily and successfully solved - now for the next 1,001 questions, by which time I just may be able to graduate from a "newbie". Many thanks again - Bob Deb.

Does it have to be firefox.? I tried that same command line but with:

QupZilla https://webmail.shaw.ca

and no go. I do have QupZilla entered in my menu as my preferred browser.

Also, drag and drop from the browser address bar doesn't work either.

The executable usually has no capital letters. So try: qupzilla https://webmail.shaw.ca

Not related to your question:
Be noted, that Qupzilla is factually dead for Linux, except you compile it yourself. There do nowhere exist compiled binaries for Qupzilla 2, older versions are supposed to have not closed security holes. See here.

Bob:
As a lastpass user for several years, your inquiry intrigues me.
There is no "login from the desktop". It is a browser add-on.
Fire up your browser and login to LP. Done.

and if "https://lastpass.com/index" is just an example, then "never mind" and it's a poor choice. :)
It is not even accessible after logging in at https://lastpass.com/?ac=1&lpnorefresh=1

Please clarify.
Thank you,

@Pjotr: Thank you. Apparently, Linux is always case sensitive, except when it's not :D

@Cosmo: Re: QupZilla being dead for Linux. Not so. The current version is available in Manjaro/Arch repositories.

@Cosmo: I'm not in Manjaro at the moment because I have been test driving it on USB and normally use Mint (as now). Will be on it later today and will post a link for QupZilla then.

I think a better way is to use xdg-open like this:

Code: Select all

xdg-open https://www.google.com/
xdg-open will open the URL in your preferred browser, much better than hard-coding a browser in the command.
