Having just done a clean install of Linux Mint 18 Mate, I installed a couple of programs and decided to run the backup tool included in the menu before i spent ages installing software and finding it did not work (it was one of many things not working in the last installation)
It starts OK, asks for admin password, opens the select destination screen, opens the select packages to include screen, and then closes without displaying any packages. It definitely terminates completely because if I run it with the system monitor running, I can see the process disappearing.
Is this a known bug? or something weird to my installation?

Re: Backup manager not working?
Run the program via Terminal and look the error messages.
Re: Backup manager not working?
I am sure the error message makes sense to someone more in tune with the intricacies of the system
(mintbackup.py:18759): Gdk-ERROR **: The program 'mintbackup.py' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.
(Details: serial 3149 error_code 11 request_code 130 (MIT-SHM) minor_code 5)
(Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the GDK_SYNCHRONIZE environment
variable to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

https://www.google.fi/#q=+Gdk-ERROR+**: ... stem+error.
There is reliable programs like BackInTime-gnome and Grsync also.

Hmmmm
given it seems to be a known issue, makes you wonder why the devs have not retired it until the bugs are fixed
thanks for the suggestions for alternatives
