Weak HDMI signal

Post by arky »

I have a HP laptop, model 2000, running Linux Mint 18, XFCE.
When I hook up a HDMI cable to my TV, which is a 4 year old 60" LCD Vizio,
and select it as the display, it works just fine.

However, there is another TV that I would like to display the laptop on.
It is an older TV, but it does have 2 HDMI ports.
But when I go through the same procedure as I do on my Vizio,
the display just indicates "weak or no signal" no matter which port
I use.

The weird thing is, about a week ago, I hooked up the laptop to this older TV
and the display worked just fine.

After trying everything I knew to try, I once again hooked up the laptop
to my Vizio and it still works just fine.

Has anyone experienced hooking a laptop up to an older TV
and it shows just a "weak or no signal" display ?

If the older TV is displaying "weak or no signal" it seems to me that it is referring to its built-in broadcast TV tuner, rather than the HDMI input from your computer.

I suggest you check the "AV" menu options on your older TV and make sure that you are selecting the correct HDMI input connector.

There is no doubt I am selecting the correct TV input.
The TV has 2 HDMI inputs; I have tried both of them.
The message is not "no signal" that you would get
when nothing is connected to the input, it is
"weak or no signal".

When that message is displayed, unplugging the HDMI
cable changes the message from "weak or no signal"
to "no signal".
