mount.ntfs and CPU %

Post by bad medicine »

I'm having sluggish/temporary freeze behavior lately and one thing I notice is that a process called mount.ntfs is consuming up to 100% CPU during some of these episodes. What is it, and can I do anything about it using so much %?

Hi bad medicine, have you edited your /etc/fstab file? Could you post it here, please?

As I see, it's easier and safer to edit that file with the disks utility. If you have changed that, maybe you can try reverting the change and setting auto-mount in disks and see if it helps. :)

I havent edited it to my recollection, but I forget things easily :D In fact I can't remember how to find the contents of fstab, but as soon as I do I can post it. :D

I manually mount my storage drive each time I start Linux, if that helps. Other than that I don't mount anything on a regular basis.

Here it is

The request to see the contents of fstab was to see if there was a problem in that file. There is none. The problem is elsewhere.

Are you accessing an external drive? USB or LAN?

I occasionally use a thumb drive but I've not been using one when the CPU % shoots up. Havent used one in a week. Other than that, I never use an external drive.

The next time the problem occurs, try to get the results of the command:

Code: Select all

mount
I am guessing that you have some ntfs partitions in addition to the linux partitions. Right?
Show

Code: Select all

sudo parted --list

The % changes so rapidly its hard to execute the command right before it drops off. But here are 2 examples taken as quickly as possible when I saw the % at 30% (first one) and 70+%. They may be identical, I didn't compare

I really don't see anything wrong with your mount of /dev/sda5. That is the only thing that could be related to "mount.ntfs".
Does the problem only occur when that partition is mounted?
You could use these instructions to mount the "storage" partition, instead of doing it manually. Maybe that would give you different results. It might be worth a try.

I always have that mounted so I don't know if it happens when its not mounted. I have my browser and email profiles in there so I can't do much without it mounted. But I do know that getting slowed down by it is a recent development.

If it gets annoying enough I'll that fix you linked, but I'm too lazy to do it unless I really need to
