What about ls -lh /mnt/home/signmeuptoo/.local/share/

Well, I have no idea what transpired here, but you're missing a good chunk of your home folder structure.

The only thing I can recommend given the circumstances is to reinstall.

Try adding a new user. Enter these one line at a time

Code: Select all

sudo -i
mount -t proc none /mnt/proc
mount --rbind /sys /mnt/sys
mount --rbind /dev /mnt/dev
/usr/sbin/chroot /mnt /bin/bash
source /etc/profile
echo "nameserver 8.8.8.8" >> /etc/resolv.conf
export PS1="\[\033[1;33m\]chroot to ->\[\033[1;31m\](system) #\[\e[0m\] "
useradd test
exit
reboot
Then try logging on a user test

Wow, I just tried copy pasting that again, and on the second line I got mount point /mnt/proc does not exist

Try purging xscreensaver - if your partition is already mounted then skip mount /dev/sda6 /mnt and continue with the rest.

Code: Select all

sudo -i
mount /dev/sda6 /mnt
mount -t proc none /mnt/proc
mount --rbind /sys /mnt/sys
mount --rbind /dev /mnt/dev
/usr/sbin/chroot /mnt /bin/bash
source /etc/profile
echo "nameserver 8.8.8.8" >> /etc/resolv.conf
export PS1="\[\033[1;33m\]chroot to ->\[\033[1;31m\](system) #\[\e[0m\] "
apt-get purge xscreensaver
rm /home/signmeuptoo/.config/autostart/xscreensaver.desktop
exit
reboot

You're going to have to learn to mark these post's code tags.

So you never created the new user :?

If purging xscreensaver doesn't work try the new user again.

So I'm on my other Mint install on another computer in another room. it didn't work, still goes to the same text prompt, so I am rebooting to the DVD again.

I don't want to give up, I do want to figure this out but I know that there is a limit to what I can ask of you.

I am back, I booted to the DVD again on the problem system. I DID actually create that user "test" or at least I followed your instructions to a T twice, so I am trying.

Thank you for what you've done so far, I know it's out of the goodness of your being to help. My goal is to learn and to be able to stop using Windows all I can. I believe in Linux and so far I like Mint regardless of the issues I've been contending with for the last 3 days, I understand that putting the screensaver on here might have been my undoing, but I'm not used to such an unexpected fail.
