Update Manager... has yet to work

Post by wedjlok »

I have seen plenty of other posts on this subject, and have tried other people's advice about changing mirrors and trying again, however, after installing Mint 18.1 several days ago I still have yet to successfully get ANY updates installed since putting Mint oinxi -Fsz
n the system.

I am ONLY using Mint, without any dual boot or anything else. Below is the result of my inxi -Fsz in terminal:

Code: Select all

Also, no matter what mirror I use for getting the updates, I also get this error:

I am running the Update Manager at the Second Level in its preferences (Optimize Stability and Security).

Any info is appreciated, as it's obviously an ongoing issue for more than just myself, and am hesitant to believe that this is just because of temporarily down servers, etc., as it has been the case with EVERY mirror I have tried since install.

Taking the link from the first error that you got, if you click on http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/ ... _amd64.deb what does you web browser do? For me it starts downloading this file.

Well, it did seem to finally work. When I did click on the fist link in the browser, it prompted to download the file. Granted, I had to just walk away and let it all populate in the update manager for QUITE some time, though.

There is definitely something wrong with the system. I have been having problems for several days. Every time I open Update Manager, it tells me my currently selected mirror is out of date. I let it go through the list of mirrors, select the fastest one, and do the updates. Then the next time I see there are available updates, same thing. This time it told me my apt cache is corrupt, and I'm going through the procedure yet again. Something is not right here.

Finished the process of selecting a new mirror, closed the Software Sources window, and opened Update Manager. It says:
Please switch to another mirror
http://muug.ca/mirror/linuxmint/packages is not up to date.

I'm at least a bit comforted in knowing that it's not just me, then. Not to say that this shouldn't be an issue that needs to be addressed systemwide, since it DOES seem to be somewhat of an ongoing issue for so many, from what I have been reading.

I haven't had any issues getting updates. In Software Sources I am using packages.linuxmint.com and archive.ubuntu.com

OP only had issues with security.ubuntu.com, that we know. That is unrelated to Linux Mint mirrors. I think you have a separate issue jimallyn.

+1 xenopeek on this. I update several mints and I have never seen this issue.
@jimallyn
try temporarily disabling extra ppa's and repositories
Can you update without these?

I think since xenopeek pointed out that the OP's problem was only with security.ubuntu.com, I will duck out, and if I don't get my problem fixed on my own soon, I will start my own thread. Unless you think that my results may give some clue to solving the OP's problem, then I will try it and post here. Otherwise, I'll get out of the way and stop cluttering up this thread with what is probably an unrelated problem.

Coincident with reading this post last evening, I'm now experiencing a repo problem :?

Code: Select all

Err:6 http://packages.linuxmint.com serena InRelease
Could not connect to packages.linuxmint.com:80 (208.77.20.11), connection timed out [IP: 208.77.20.11 80]
Ping is also failing

Code: Select all

[bill@XPS] ~/script $ ping -c3 208.77.20.11
PING 208.77.20.11 (208.77.20.11) 56(84) bytes of data.

--- 208.77.20.11 ping statistics ---

The update manager has the red X in the panel.

Ya know, when I was doing the update that made me make this post to begin with, I was getting the error for the serena InRelease saying it failed every time. Although, I guess it did finally update everything after going through the different mirrors, but like I mentioned, it took quite some time. I had to let it go and just walk away and come back later to check and it was updated. I never actually SPECIFICALLY looked to see if the InRelease updated or not, though, but I didn't have any errors listed when I came back finally.
