NVidia screen resolution reverting to 1024 solved

Post by ChrisCharlton »

Hi all - sorry for a possibly trivial post - but -
I've got a wide screen monitor and an NVidia 7600 graphics card. I have adjusted xorg.conf as per a variety of posts such that it seems to be correct, and when running nvidia-settings, I can select 1680x1050 (my intended resolution) but it does not 'stick'. It sticks as far as the linux log on screen when I enter my username and password (I press the button on the monitor and it confirms 1680x1050) but as soon as gnome comes up, the resolution has reverted back down to 1024x768. I then have to reselect the higher resolution in admin/nvidia-settings again.

So what am I doing wrong? Any suggestions? in case it helps my xorg.conf is pasted below.

Thanks

Chris

Did you change nvidia-settings as root?

Code: Select all

gksu nvidia-settings

Yes I did, and I've tried it both through
sudo nvidia-settings

and directly as
sudo gedit xorg.conf
taking the various bits I've got from previous posts and from running gtf.

No idea if this is of any relavence.
But for your modeline you have typos for Hsync and Vsync, should be lowercase but Im not sure if that matters.
Modeline "1680x1050_59.20" 145.04 1680 1784 1968 2256 1050 1051 1054 1086 -HSync +Vsync to;
Modeline "1680x1050_59.20" 145.04 1680 1784 1968 2256 1050 1051 1054 1086 -hsync +vsync

Also, under your Screen section you have two defaultdepths
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultDepth 24
Option "TwinView" "0"
Option "metamodes" "1680x1050 +0+0; 1440x900 +0+0"
DefaultDepth 24

You can remove that bottom one, again not sure if that makes any effect or not. Besides that the actually format of xorg looks right....

Hi,
thanks for responding. I changed things as you suggested (sudo gedit) and it made no difference.

Also - the screen resolution tool (rather than the nvidia tool) just seems to screw up the screen. It does not (generally) recognise the screen/display resolutions.

To avoid unnecessary work - can you get the right resolution? It's "just" that it does not stick?
Not that it makes me any wiser.....

(sorry for the delay - I've been away).

Yes - I can get the right resolution (1680x1050) by manually starting the nvidia-settings (either with sudo or not), selecting it and applying. I've then tried saving changes (many times) - this is what is not 'sticking'

Thanks

Heres something you might try.

If you know the right vga number for your 1680 x 1050 resolution that you want, you can try adding the vga= to your "/boot/grub/menu.lst" file. The entry would look like kinda like this vga=your_number_here ie:(vga=791).

That file is read by grub at boot and should remember your settings. We used this to fix a friends Sidux box that had a similar problem, but his was due to constant kernel upgrades that Sidux is known for.

This may not fix your problem, but it might be worth a try since you seem to have tried most other things. I haven't been able to find a proper vga number for the resolution that you want yet, but if you know it you can try this. Just keep track of the changes that you make or make sure that the file is backed up so you can return things as they were.

Also the following sections of your xorg file look a little strange, at least to me, but I could be wrong:

ModeLine "1440x900_60.00" 106.470 1440 1520 1672 1904 900 901 904 932 -hsync +vsync
# 1680x1050 @ 59.20 Hz (GTF) hsync: 64.29 kHz; pclk: 145.04 MHz
Modeline "1680x1050_59.20" 145.04 1680 1784 1968 2256 1050 1051 1054 1086 -HSync +Vsync

*note the underscores on the resolutions and the commented out line as well?

Nothing in my file looks this way. I believe the underscores should be an "@" symbol. Just a guess as your system may be different.

ie: modeline "1792x1344@60" 204.8 1792 1920 2120 2448 1344 1345 1348 1394

Hope this helps you....

hmm
nvidia-settings must be started with root rights to save anything

Code: Select all

gksu nvidia-settings
However that deletes any special settings you may have done in xorg.conf
Here is a better way

Thanks to those who replied. I've managed to get to the root of the problemn - a clash between the 'set screen resolution' tool ()in mint/preferences) and the NVidia one. I had managed to get the two to disagree with each other which was causing some kind of internal confusion. Once I got the two aligned, the problem went away. I did not realise the non-Nvidia tool was having such an effect.

Thanks again

I found that in the comments of the xorg.conf file that the settings in this file are mostly ignored nowdays.

Had the same problem, nothing I tried here worked, but I did get my resolution to stick by going to the hidden folder .config and inside is a file called monitors.xml.

Open monitors.xml with a text editor and you'll see width and height in html like tags, just change to what you want it to boot to!
