I have right clicked on a number of images and chose "copy image" but where are they stored? I cant find them.

They (more exactly: a list of those files) go into the clipboard. You can now paste them into another folder (where you need to have right access).

After you "Copy", go to another directory, rt-click->Paste.

As Cosmo said, "a list of those files", so you can "Paste" into a text file and get that list. But if you do the above, the files are copied.

Your data and OS are backed up....right?

But you have to perform these actions before you restart your machine otherwise the files are lost forever.

The list of files will be lost, but the actual files should be safe unless you selected "cut" and the machine shuts down during the process of actually moving the files.

That is, how the clipboard works in every system - except if a clipboard manager is installed. Also of course the user may not fill the clipboard with another content, before (s)he does the paste operation.
