shutdown: gnome-keyring-daemon still running

Postby Rhinox » Wed Aug 16, 2017 12:35 pm

I just installed Linux Mint 18.2 Cinnamon. Everything works, except for one thing: whenever I try to shutdown (restart), I get this annoying message:

A program is still running:
gnome-keyring-daemon
Not responding
Waiting for the program to finish. Interrupting the program may cause you to lose work.
[Lock Screen] [Cancel] [Restart Anyway]

I can wait forever, but it does not disappear. All I can do is to press "Restart Anyway". How can I get rid of this? BTW, system was just installed but is fully updated, no additional software installed...

I have this exact same issue. It started after the last update I ran about a week or so ago at most, Is there a fix yet?

thanks

I started having the exact same issue after updating to 18.2 though it didn't start right away but rather after updating some package few days laters.

One of numerous problems I have seen this last couple of weeks answered by others; I will copy and paste the code here.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install byobu

and then:

Code: Select all

sudo purge-old-kernels

This also takes care of the "dangling Kernels". The daemon usually goes away one or 2 boots later.

Thanks for that....I followed this, too, and it seems to be solved :)

What error message do you get when you run the command purge-old-kernels? I get a message that tells me exactly what to install and how. Do you get that, too?

I'm running into the same issue with a fresh install of Linux Mint 18.2. I've tried repeated installs, makes no difference.

I tried the above steps, and, if anything, the only thing that's changed is that I now get a different message pop up, which is "A program is still running: Certificate and Key Storage" "Not responding".

I am not an experience user of the Linux world, however I think I figured out why this annoying issue is presented. When you upgrade to a newer version of Mint and you have more than one user, you need to log in all of the accounts at least once.
On the reminder on the far fight of the screen, you are notified if you want to install any updates.
When you first log in, the update link requires the you answer if you want to just keep my computer safe, you want to view the offered changes or just update.
This process has to be answered by all of the users you have created.
Just log out and log in to the other user and select the update icon and answer how to apply the updates.
All should be okay...Rafael (at least it works for me)

My installs were fresh 18.2 with only one user, so logging in and out of multiple user accounts and doing something can't be the solution for everyone experiencing this. Oddly enough, the problem went away on one machine. I'm going to have to test again from scratch to see if I can reproduce this yet again.

FWIW, this worked for me too. Curiously, it took a few reboots to take effect.

The apparent fix doesn't work for me.
sudo purge-old-kernels produces "No kernels are eligible for removal"
It STILL won't shut down properly.
Cheers

This worked for me.
Cancel shutdown, open terminal.

Code: Select all

gnome-keyring-daemon -r

Close terminal and request shutdown.

See

Code: Select all

man gnome-keyring-daemon
for more.

Yes, this works. But I have to do it every time before trying shutdown! So the problem persists (even with 18.3) and true solution is nowhere...

FYI, I just tried Debian and Ubuntu (with whatever desktop they offer), and I had no problem with shutdown. So this is clearly something specific to Mint & Cinnamon...

As above, same for me, have to run every time before shutdown only way I have been able to fix it is to turn off Auto Login. Not a good fix (Mint 18.2 Cinnamon)

I have had the same issue, Gnome-keyring-daemon halts shutdown and reboot, in my case the solution.. which may or may not work for you... was to go into startup applications and stop all instances of gnome-keyring-daemon (3) in my case. I Rebooted and was immediately able to reboot, and shutdown. I then activated the top gnome-keyring-daemon in start up applications, and selected the run now button, and rebooted. So far, it appears to have worked, gnome-keyring-daemon is working, and have been able to reboot and shutdown normally. My issue may be an isolated one, in which human error may have played a part, causing multiple instances of gnome-keyring-daemon, to have been created in startup applications. The idea of looking in startup applications, was because when I created a new user, to find out if it was user related or systemic, the new user didn't have the issue, but the original user did. Which eventually led me to startup applications.

after a couple of reboots, it came back, so they are all disabled now. So far, after several reboots it appears to be ok.
