Second monitor only works in guest session? (AMD GPUs, Mint 18.2 Cinnamon 64-bit)

Postby jumbot » Tue Sep 19, 2017 10:48 pm

I'm brand new to Mint, relatively new to Linux (mostly Ubuntu/Xubuntu in the past). I'm currently running Mint 18.2 Cinnamon (64-bit) on a desktop, but I've run into an interesting (maybe not...) graphics problem.

I have two AMD R9 270X GPUs for use with two monitors, but cannot get the second monitor to show up. This is using the default Radeon drivers after a new Mint install. The Display menu through Settings crashes when I try to open it; if I disconnect the second monitor Display opens fine. I've tried reinstalling Mint and deselecting the "install third party software" option during installation, but the results were the same.

One thing I've discovered is that both monitors will function perfectly (as far as I can tell) if I log into a Guest session. What is the difference between Guest and my normal user that could result in this? The radeon drivers appeared to be active in the Guest session as well.

I understand the AMD proprietary drivers aren't compatible with Mint 18, and I did have some minor success with the second monitor working using AMDGPU-PRO. This introduced some flickering in both screens, however, so I'm hoping there's an answer using the default radeon drivers.

I understand the AMD proprietary drivers aren't compatible with Mint 18

Where did you get that idea from?

Please start a terminal and post the output of this command:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz

Enclose the results in code markers, which you can select from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply.

From here, unless I'm interpreting it incorrectly:
https://www.linuxmint.com/rel_sarah_cinnamon.php
AMD Catalyst (fglrx) drivers

The AMD Catalyst (fglrx) drivers are not compatible with Xorg 1.18, which is the version used in Linux Mint 18.

These drivers are proprietary and so their code is not available. AMD indicated they no longer wanted to support them and urged their customers to use open-source drivers instead.

If you are using an ATI GPU in Linux Mint 18, the operating system will either select the Radeon or AMDGPU drivers for you, and these are installed by default.

Curacao XT is a reshashed Pitcairn card. As far as I know, that's a GCN 1st gen part, also called Southern Islands. AMDGPU-pro will not work wit that.

That being said, teh fact that guest session can use both monitors tells me this is a display server problem, and not an actual driver.

For my curiosity's sake, can you create a new user with admin priviliges, and then login with that user to what happens?

What does

Code: Select all

xrandr -q

say?

The second monitor works when I do this.

Where did you get that idea from?

That's the old catalyst drivers. The AMDGPU series are AMD drivers. The article doesn't make that properly clear.

There are several ways to address this, but it seems your first useris not "waking up" the monitor. Sounds like a bug with mdm or lightdm. De-activate auto-login to start with.

Then install the following:

Code: Select all

sudo apt install arandr

then run it

Code: Select all

arandr

This is a dirt simple utility to set the resolution on monitors. See if you can locate the 2nd output and run it.

It seems Mint 18 uses LightDM by default, from what I've read.

mr_raider wrote: De-activate auto-login to start with.

Auto-login is not active.

Code: Select all

arandr
Displays just my main monitor (labeled DVI-0) in my first user. I don't know how to "activate" the second monitor through arandr -- none of the other options in the Outputs dropdown are selectable.

On the new admin user, the second monitor (labeled DVI-I-1-2) shows up.

Any ideas? Thanks for the input so far.

Ah, I see. Thanks for the clarification. I did try the AMDGPU drivers: the second monitor started working but there was noticeable tearing and flickering relative to the default.

That can probably be fixed. A simple google search on amdgpu tearing reveals these:

How to install & configure amdgpu-pro beta drivers with tearfree enabled
Eliminate screen tearing with AMD GPU on Ubuntu

I suggest performing those steps in the second link with AMDGPU-PRO installed. You can ignore the word 'beta' in the first link.

Cheers.

AMD GPU-pro is unlikely to work on a Pitcairn card. Install it if you like, but you better be handy with command line.

What files are located in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d

What is the content of 10-radeon.conf

I'm certain the OP said they'd got it working with AMDGPU-PRO but was experiencing tearing.

Cheers.

jumbot,

When you use the Monitor Preferences gui app, it reads/writes to /home/yourname/.config/monitors.xml so try removing it from your home folder.

Seems to be missing, unless 10-radeon.conf is found somewhere else.

Unless there's a simpler way around this, I'll try the AMDGPU route with the instructions catweazel provided. I'm still curious why a new admin user, or guest user, would not have the same display problem as my primary user.

Yeah I have this entry:

Code: Select all

mr_raider@ThinkPad-11e /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d $ cat 10-radeon.conf
Section "OutputClass"
        Identifier "Radeon"
        MatchDriver "radeon"
        Driver "radeon"

I don't now if you need it since I have a Carrizo card that uses amdgpu (not radeon) so it's unlikely my radeon file does anyhting.

I'm not even sure it has to do with your user, just the first user. You can try this experiment:

1. press ctrl-alt-f1, this will drop to a terminal

2. shut down the x server

Code: Select all

sudo service lightdm stop

3. Re-start it

Code: Select all

sudo service lightdm start

and log back in.

I bet your 2nd monitor will show.

You can also check your home fodler for a hidden .xinitrc or .xsession file. It may have config info and then compare it to the 2nd user you created.
