Jumbled wallpaper LM 17.3 32b XFCE

Post by Pastcal »

I've just done a fresh install of LM 17.3 32 bit XFCE, to replace 17.0 32 bit XFCE on the same hardware. Everything works as expected except the wallpaper (or the plain colour) is jumbled on start up. If I change or adjust the wallpaper the jumbling goes away until the next boot. I've googled the problem and searched here and tried changing the compositor settings in Window Manager Tweeks and Window Manager to no avail.

The hardware is an ancient HP/Compaq SFF single core desktop. Any ideas? Thanks.

You should provide more system info ... copy/paste this to the terminal and copy/paste the text output here ...

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
... but for old single core hardware the first thing I'd try is turning off the compositor altogether. The easiest way is to go to Settings > Desktop Settings > Windows. Change the selection in the drop down menu to just 'Xfwm4'. In fact I've installed Xfce on more powerful systems and that was still one of the first things I did.

"try is turning off the compositor altogether. The easiest way is to go to Settings > Desktop Settings > Windows. Change the selection in the drop down menu to just 'Xfwm4'." Yes I tried that but no improvement.

Code: Select all

Hello, Pastcal.

I know it does not really explain why it did not happen on Mint 17 xfce, but why it only started on Mint 17.3.
But looking at your really old and powerless CPU in the inxi report

Code: Select all

CPU: Single core Intel Celeron (-UP-) cache: 128 KB
flags: (pae sse sse2) bmips: 3990 speed: 1995 MHz (max)
I am more amazed that this system runs any recent operating system at all. :?

Too late now, but perhaps instead of installing Mint 17.3 from scratch, doing an in-place upgrade from Mint 17 xfce to Mint 17.3 xfce through Update Manager - Edit - "Upgrade to Mint 17.3" would have spared you the problem.
In particular it would have spared you running a de-supported kernel 3.19.0. You would have continued using the still supported LTS kernel series 3.13.0.

Regards,
Karl

Hello karlchen, thanks for the input. The system is indeed very old and slow, but surprisingly usable. The wallpaper issue isn't a huge problem really, but I thought there might be a simple solution. If not, well, 'no worries' as our Australian cousins say.
