Hi,
I've been using Linux Mint for about six months and I'm completed sold on it. My young children are just wanting to start to learn to use computers so I've installed Linux on an old laptop of mine for them to play with.
The admin account is in my name (let's call it Dad). I've created two other user accounts (Child 1 and Child 2). They are ordinary users without the privileges to install software.
However when I log in as Child 1 or Child 2, they can still see all the software on the device in the start menu, and there are no restrictions on what they can run, even though they can't install anything.
I'd like to be able to restrict the software they can access strictly to the few apps I've installed for them to play with.
How do I restrict accounts Child 1 and Child 2 from being able to see or run software that was installed with the Dad Admin profile? I'm guessing I need to put Child 1 and 2 in a group and then somehow restrict that group from being able to access the software I don't want them to see/use. How would I go about doing this? I'd prefer to do it through a GUI tool if one exists but happy to use the CLI if someone could give me a few pointers.
Many thanks.

You can do the following:
- with your administrative account create the child user
- log on to the child user
- clear the desktop
- delete the menu
- delete the panel
- create on the desktop new launchers for the application you want the child to be able to run ( right mouse click in empty spot of desktop)
One way out of this environment is to press the power button of the computer and select shut down or create a new launcher on the desktop that contains this command: shutdown now .
If one of the applications is a browser, then the information contained in the previous response should be carefully review and appropriately applied.
Also, you should carefully review and test my suggested solution to ensure that it fully meets your requirements.
