Seagate Backup Plus Slim 1TB external not detected

Greetings

I just got a new external hard disk marked on the box for Windows 7 and higher or Mac Os or Android. I wish to transfer some photos from my Linux Mint machine. However, the drive is not detected. Is the USB Mass Storage driver support in Linux Mint lacking or is there someway to get it to work? lsusb shows the device.

Eh? did you format the drive?

You'll probably have to install gparted to do this... be very careful that you select the correct drive, best to format to NTFS.

USB drives work just fine in Linux and should be viewable on the left hand side of your home folder under devices.

That size doesn't look right, though. If this is the first time using the drive, you'll probably need to partition it before you can use it. You can install gparted from the software manager, or synaptic, or the terminal sudo apt install gparted, whichever method you prefer. Choose what partition type you want to use (probably either ntfs or ext4). If you're going to use the external drive in other non-linux systems, ntfs is probably the better choice (or even fat32 but that has a major limitation: no single file over 4gb). If it's for linux-only, ext4 may be better, to retain file permissions properly. BUT if gparted is showing an incorrect size too (144115188.1 GB) there's probably some other problem (the drive itself or controller?, the usb cable?) ... in that case, you'll need to get that sorted out before partitioning.

No, my kid just plonked it on a Win7 machine and copied her photo albums on it without any formatting. I decided to add my albums too. However, my LM18 machine makes detection wooshes but does not list the drive anywhere. lsusb & lsblk shows it.

FYI : The [UFW_BLOCK] entries are highlighted in bold white which does not show in the pasted output here. Does that mean something to you?

Unplug the drive, open a terminal and enter udevadm monitor --udev then plug the drive back in and paste back the output of udevadm.

You will have to hit ctl-c to exit it.

I found something interesting here when googling your vendor:product ID.

You might be experiencing the same issue and the last post explains the resolution.

Hi I'm having the same problem. It worked alright until I put Live EFI boot loader on, to use on another computer. Since then I can only load EFI boot loader with it and in GParted it just shows up as unreadable.

Boot loaders are not up to speed with USB3 connections, yet, and you already know there's something wobbly about Linux looking at this model of drive. Try connecting the drive through a USB2 cable or hub. That way the computer has no choice about the connection, it simply doesn't see the USB3 wires.

Tried the USB 2 and this is what came up:-

A weeny bit wasteful maybe, using a 1TB drive like a USB stick?

If there's a block-device store holding a Live Session iso, Linux does have a problem with that. A Live Session iso is assembled to look like IBM, MAC, MBR, GPT, EFI and CDROM all at the same time. Somewhere inside GNU-Linux there's auto-mounting instructions that look for an iso9660 signature first. Finding that, it's not bothered about partition tables. The mount proceeds expecting a read-only file system starting at byte 32768. You can examine the signatures of a device to see it there's anything unexpected. The -na option stops anything being written, despite the 'bytes were erased' message...

...after which gparted (probably) won't get confused but it (probably) won't boot any more.

"A weeny bit wasteful..." Only joking. Writing a Live Session iso to the start of my drive is the first of several obstacles any crack-kiddy would meet trying to read my files. You can make the rest of the drive accessible even when the Live Session has already booted, if you know how.
