[SOLVED] Console Command sudo apt-get update does NOT WORK

Postby Serpico » Wed Nov 08, 2017 10:21 pm

Hello guys.
I started out using Linux Mint 18.2 64bit today. I wanted to install some new Icons from here: https://itsfoss.com/install-icon-linux-mint/
after I typed in the command

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
it always stayed at 0%. Right after the Installation I changed the Main (sonya) and base (xenial) server to my nearest ones. When I saw that nothing was happening via the command mentioned above I tried out the standard settings where the main server is http://packages.linuxmint.com and base is http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu but it still does not work!

Also Once you change the servers you have to "renew" them, the green bar which fills up, always fills up to like 99% and then nothing happens. The only thing I did in regards to internet was to switch the firewall on, I did not do the more complicated stuff I just was flicking the switch to on.

I have no clue what to do right now.
But Browser and surfing on the web works totally fine.

Thank you in Advance!

Hello Serpico Image

Welcome to Linux Mint and the Linux Mint forum :)

Pasting back the results of inxi -r and if the count returned by sudo iptables -S|wc -l is > 3 would help.

Hey WharfRat :D

Thanks for the warm welcome!

The Results of "inxi -r" are:

Code: Select all

Repos:     Active apt sources in file: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list
deb http://packages.linuxmint.com sonya main upstream import backport
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial-updates main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial-backports main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ xenial-security main restricted universe multiverse
           deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/ xenial partner
Active apt sources in file: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/snwh-pulp-xenial.list
           deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/snwh/pulp/ubuntu xenial main
           deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/snwh/pulp/ubuntu xenial main

The count of "sudo iptables -S|wc -l" is 102

I hope this helps.

The count of "sudo iptables -S|wc -l" is 102 indicates that filtering rules are in effect so before doing anything else turn off the firewall and reboot.

After rebooting check that sudo iptables -S|wc -l returns 3 then try sudo apt update to see if it completes.

If it doesn't, paste back the last line displayed e.g., mine is Get:8 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial-backports InRelease [102 kB]

Interesting. I wonder what I did wrong. But yeah, the count returned to 3 however, the update still won't work. It stays at 0% and the line is now in a orange color.

Can you try opening Software Sources and changing the Base mirror to something other than archive.ubuntu.com

Although it's fine on my end, you seem to have a problem with it on your end :?

The Cinnamon version looks a lot more involved than the mate desktop's version :?

Don't refresh it there, just select the the mirror then do the apt update in the terminal.

By any chance are you using VPN :?:

Nothing on the Windows' partition is going to have an impact with Mint.

Now it's getting stuck at security.ubuntu.com

Just to see what happens edit /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list with gksudo xed /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list and comment the line

deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ xenial-security main restricted universe multiverse

so it looks like

# deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ xenial-security main restricted universe multiverse

Then sudo apt update again.

It's time for me to pack it in for the evening so I'll check back tomorrow....

Don't wish to interfere but did the OP check the sha256 sums before installing? A corrupt installation media might be causing these problems.

Re: Console Command sudo apt-get update does NOT WORK

After I did your code, this popped up:

Code: Select all

deb http://packages.linuxmint.com sonya main upstream import backport

deb http://mirror.serverloft.eu/ubuntu/ubuntu xenial main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://mirror.serverloft.eu/ubuntu/ubuntu xenial-updates main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://mirror.serverloft.eu/ubuntu/ubuntu xenial-backports main restricted universe multiverse

deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ xenial-security main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/ xenial partner

Also this was written in the terminal:

Code: Select all

serpico@serpico-desktop ~ $ gksudo xed /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list

The german stuff reads something like this: WARNING **: Set document metadata failed: Changing the Attribute metadata::xed-position not supported.

I edited it like this:

Code: Select all

deb http://packages.linuxmint.com sonya main upstream import backport

deb http://mirror.serverloft.eu/ubuntu/ubuntu xenial main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://mirror.serverloft.eu/ubuntu/ubuntu xenial-updates main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://mirror.serverloft.eu/ubuntu/ubuntu xenial-backports main restricted universe multiverse

# deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ xenial-security main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/ xenial partner

After the sudo apt update it stayed like this for 5 minutes:

Code: Select all

serpico@serpico-desktop ~ $ sudo apt update
[sudo] Passwort für serpico:
OK:1 http://ppa.launchpad.net/snwh/pulp/ubuntu xenial InRelease
OK:2 http://mirror.serverloft.eu/ubuntu/ubuntu xenial InRelease
OK:3 http://mirror.serverloft.eu/ubuntu/ubuntu xenial-updates InRelease
OK:4 http://mirror.serverloft.eu/ubuntu/ubuntu xenial-backports InRelease
Ign:5 http://packages.linuxmint.com sonya InRelease
OK:6 http://packages.linuxmint.com sonya Release

Thanks for the help so far WharfRat! I really appreciate it! :D

Yes, I did that. I found a good tutorial and the lines in the verification for my linux mint version were the same the windows console was spitting out.

EDIT: Here is the Picture to verify that I did check the sha256: https://imgur.com/sUeQyfX

This is a really weird situation.

Can you boot your installation media and run sudo apt update to see if it completes or exhibits the same anomaly.

Hi, Serpico.

Seems to me that I spot IPv6 addresses exactly when apt does no make any progress.
Would it be worth a try to persuade the Software Management system not to use IPv6 and stick to IPv4 only?

Cf. Problem with IPv6 sudo apt-get update/upgrade

Tell the software management system to stick to IPv4 only:

Code: Select all

gksudo xed /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/99force-ipv4

This will create the file /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/99force-ipv4 with root permissions, in case it does not exist yet, else it will edit the file.
If this line is not present,

Code: Select all

Acquire::ForceIPv4 "true";
add the line to the file.
Save. Exit the editor xed.

Next run

Code: Select all

sudo apt update
again. Hope it will not get stuck any more.

Regards,
Karl

Reverting the forced IPv4:

Code: Select all

sudo rm /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/99force-ipv4
