How to find old partition label and mount point [SOLVED]

Postby In2Blues » Thu Nov 09, 2017 4:36 am

I am using Cinnamon 18.2 as my only OS.

I have a 2TB external HDD that had a NTFS partition and a ext4 partition. I formatted the NTFS partition to ext4 only to discover that I can't remember the label or mount point for that partition. I want to keep it the same as before.

Is there any way to find out what the previous label and mount point were?

The only stuff I could find was about renaming partitions but I want to find the name that was used before I formatted it.

Alternatively, if that can't be done, will changing the label and mount point cause any problems?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Not sure about 'previous' ( that's probably gone after a re-format ) but you should be able to find current/relevant information using

Code: Select all

lsblk

You can also check fstab
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Fstab
Note the part about root having ownership of ext partitions. You may have to give your user account permissions to access it using chown.

Wow. As soon as I saw this I realized that I had already put that info here. Thanks so much.

I definitely have to stop doing things like this in the wee hours of the morning.
