Linux Mint 18.2 - cannot connect when disconnecting from VPN

Postby share3141 » Fri Nov 10, 2017 1:23 pm

I am using Cinnamon 18.2 in a dual boot environment with Windows 10.
I am using PIA v75 software (Private Internet Access).
I have a wired connection.
I have no issues connecting to the VPN.

The issue is:
My network connection behaves differently under Windows when I disconnect from the VPN than it does when I disconnect from the VPN in Mint.

I can still access the internet (disconnected) under Windows but I can't access it under Mint (disconnected).

Any thoughts?

When pia starts it's supposed to grab your /etc/resolv.cong data (for DNS), replace it with its data (points to its DNS servers) and on exit from the pia gui should place the original data back. But if you kill the pia gui or do a hard reboot, pia doesn't get the chance to restore /etc/resolv.conf to its original state and is left blank. If you open a terminal and enter cat /etc/resolv.conf and find it blank (when pia is off), then this would confirm.

A fix is to manually add nameservers to said file, in fact you could add pia's own DNS servers to it if you like.

Code: Select all

gksudo xed /etc/resolv.conf
will open the file for editing as root.

Then add

Code: Select all

nameserver 209.222.18.222
nameserver 209.222.18.218
to it, save and test, you shouldn't have to reboot or restart anything.

This works! Thank you very much! I had hard coded the DNS numbers into the connection via Network Manager. I removed those entries and used your suggestions and it works just the way I need it to.

You're welcome, glad you got it sorted. Perhaps you could add a [SOLVED] to the original subject for others in the same boat?
