Do you get an error when using Update Manager, or what?
Open the terminal program from your menu and run this diagnostic command:
And this one:
Then copy the output from these commands and share them here for us to help analyze what may be the problem. You can select and copy text from the terminal through its Edit menu.

You can open software Manager-->Edit-->software sources . Try choosing different sources. Some sources will not respond while system arranges sources , with the fastest source at the top. Choose the fastest source.
If this does not work check your network connection.
To check memory you have memtest in the menu as you boot the machine in the boot menu
smart is the program to test your disk once you boot into LM
Good luck

Re: what's the all diagnostic programs that is typically run to see what's wrong?
there was an error on startup also:
starting version 232 ERROR '/dev/disk/by-label/' did not show up after 30 secs. sh: can't access tty: job control turned off
its long
i turned it off and turned it on again, same thing
what to do now?
in these kinds of problems?
please explain in a way someone that hasn't used linux before would understand

Re: what's the all diagnostic programs that is typically run to see what's wrong?
anyone know what this error means?
Re: what's the all diagnostic programs that is typically run to see what's wrong?
Yes, it means that you should answer the questions and follow the instructions given by xenopeek, who is one of the most knowledgeable users here. After doing that, somebody will most likely be able to give you further instructions.fixingalaptop wrote:anyone know what this error means?

Re: what's the all diagnostic programs that is typically run to see what's wrong?
how do you open a 'terminal' if the laptop has a startup error?
Re: what's the all diagnostic programs that is typically run to see what's wrong?
Is this dual boot with Windows? You might need to disable the hybrid shutdown in Windows if you have it
Re: what's the all diagnostic programs that is typically run to see what's wrong?
it's not dual-boot, this is the only os on it
there's no way to get into that thing call 'bios'
none of the 'shortcuts/hotkeys' works when starting up the os
i think maybe it's been disabled by the os or something, i dunno
if you attach an external cd drive to the laptop, would it start or boot from the cd drive?
or it would not?

Re: what's the all diagnostic programs that is typically run to see what's wrong?
it shows up on startup
it's still doing the same thign
when you turn on computer
it has a black box title,
gnu grub ver 2.02 beta2.36ubuntu3.9
there's 3 options
mint
adv options
sys setup
nothing in sys setup works
meaning that it goes to black screen empty
then back to teh 3 options
--
adv options i picked one of the recovery mode
and it does the same thing but with no 'error' at the start
it ends on 'rootfs ]#
and it has a blinking
_
the early part says ' : : running early hook [udev]
then 'starting version 232
and stuff that comes after that, i guess common usual things that always do dunno
---
on the black box thing on start it says
30s to auto-start at the bottom bbasically
