Double-click "Computer"
If you have the sidebar active (View-Sidebar-Show Sidebar)
In the side panel right click "File System".
If you then change your mind and instead make the right part of
the window active and right click "File System" to the right,
the whole window disappears.

No such behaviour on Mint 17.3, Cinnamon 2.8.8. Sounds like Nemo is simply crashing in your instance so I'd certainly find that to be a bug.

Not seeing the problem in Mint 18.2 x64 Cinnamon 3.4.6 with Kernel 4.10.0-38.
I have all the updates through Level 4 installed. Any chance it's a service level problem and you're not current?
Have you checked the System Log for any errors?
Might also want to run the following command from Terminal and post back the results, so members can check your specs:
