problems with linux mint

Hello experts, I have installed linux mint 18.2. I have used window for 25yrs. I do not know ABCD of Linux
I have several problems I list below.
1. I tried to install WINE from the terminal based on the command line provided on winehq site. it said malform entry in list 1. now synoptic manager is struck with it. i am not able to install any other software.

2. when I try to browse internet my system become awefully slow. I am really tired of browing. the browser always says a web page is slowing the process. is there any bug or a malecious programme installed.

3. I want to install a local package that has come in CD the installation given in the CD is not working. I have changed the permission to executable in the properties. It is a .tar file. How do I compile and install.

4. My brother dcpt500w printer is installed but not printing. where do i get the driver to this.

5 To write this much I have taken 20 minutes so slow is laptop working.

linux mint is instaled on /dev/sda2 of 100GB with swap area of 1GB. RAM is 1 GB Pls some one help me

Can't help with most of your list, but maybe with the first item, as I made a similar mistake at some point. Open File Manager. Click on File System in the left-side navigation pane. In the main area, click on etc, then apt. Should be a file there called sources.list. Right-click and open (will be read-only). Copy that text and post here along with the inxi output requested by ClixTrix. Hopefully we can fix the file (or delete it), which should solve the Synaptic problem, but want to make sure what it says before doing so.

1. Wine is in the Mint/Ubuntu repositories, and you can install it with Software Manager or Synaptic. That is always the best way to install software: using the tools that Mint has provided for you. If you need Wine, you might think about installing PlayOnLinux, which will allow you to have several different versions of Wine installed at the same time.

2. That usually means that a page is full of java scripts, which will really bog your machine down. When I had 4 GB of RAM in this computer, I would have a heck of a time if I had more than a few Facebook tabs open at once. (Facebook is the WORST on filling their pages with scripts.) I upgraded to 12 GB of RAM, and now it is much better.

3. It would probably help immensely if you would tell us what program you are trying to install. If it's a .tar file, you can usually navigate in the file manager to wherever you put the file, right click on the file, then click Extract here. Often one of the files that extracts will be a README file that will give some hints on installing/compiling/whatever.

4. Pjotr has tips for installing Brother printers on his Easy Linux Tips site. https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/15 There are a lot of places on the web that have bad information, but Pjotr's Easy LInux Tips site isn't one of them. LOTS of good information there. When you have a chance, wander around the whole site and see what's there.

5. Don't know what would be making your computer so slow. AS ClixTrix suggested, open a terminal, maximize it to avoid cut off lines, then enter inxi -Fxz. Copy/paste whatever that spits out into your next message here. That will give us a lot of information that will help sort out the troubles you are having.

the programme I am trying to install is a .tar file
the installDVD.txt is the read file it has following instructions.Installation Instruction for Ubuntu

First install VLC

sudo apt-get vlc*
sudo apt-get vlc-plugin*

extract the files in / from .tar file

then in terminal use following commandscd /

cd /

sudo ./install-DvD.sh

now to run the application run following command

sudo /usr/HeliosDvD/Helios.sh

but this command is not installing the DVD.

Well, I see the typo. There should be a space between ubuntu/ and xenial. How to fix would depend on which file that "deb" appears in. Meanwhile, I think jimallyn's point is well taken, that you'd be better off deleting this additional repository and using the version of Wine in the official repo. Later, when you're familiar with the system, you can start doing more complicated stuff.

That's a very low power system. As for 64 bit, this page says "if enabled" which I suppose must be done by some BIOS setting?

See the Atom N4XX stats. I'm not surprised it's slow.

I would install the 32 bit version of Mint instead. Please note that's the version that windows used on it, even though they could have put 64 bit on it. Anything under 4GB will do better with 32 bit anyway.

I have two atom-CPU mini-laptops, which are working ok with LMDE Mate 64-bit.
