New external CD drive won't burn a CD

Post by ejazzkatt »

I bought a new CD drive. It plays CDs okay but I can't get it to burn CDs. K3B gives an error CD Record 254. Brasero says Internal Error. Would someone please help me get this thing to work? Thank you.

can not provide an answer, but if you tell us the name and model number of the cd/dvd drive you are having problems with, someone might be able to help you.
Also, the output of inxi -Fzx would be helpful.

I don't see it listed in the Drives section. It is an RW type CD drive? This happens in windows too.

Hi

https://www.linuxquestions.org/question ... 175609021/Suggests to install cdrkit, mint repo has: brasero-cdrkit

To see cd device details, you may run:

Code: Select all

wodim -checkdrive
or

Code: Select all

cdrecord -checkdrive
But, there can be some other issue also.

If above doesnt help, try installing all suggested dependencies of k3b.

I hope this works...

HI "ejazzkatt",

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.

This should show up in your results of the "inxi -Fxzd" command, and run "lsusb" too, please re-run these commands and post the results or replace the other results.

Note1: Linux does not seem to like passive USB hubs which are USB hubs that do not have their own power supply. I highly recommend that you do not use them, devices plugged into these will not work or worse they work intermittently.

Note2: Some devices do not work properly on certain USB ports, so try another one. Unplug the device wait 10-12 seconds, plug it into another USB port and wait a few seconds and re-run the "inxi -Fxzd" command.

Some USB v2.0 devices will not work on USB 1 ports or USB 3.x ports

From what I have read about some newer computers, there are dedicated USB ports for USB keyboard and mouse, make sure you are not accidentally using one of those.

Hope this helps ...

Hi "ejazzkatt",

You are welcome from all of us that responded.

Your optical drives seem to be available and show in the results if the "inxi -Fxzd" now.

Did you realize the this new external USB DVD drive which I am assuming is Optical-2 is not a DVD burner only a DVD player and CD burner? It can read and play DVD's but it can only burn CD's? If it were me, I would return it and get an USB external DVD burner which probably cost the same as this optical drive did. My LG external DVD burner is around $20-$30 us, and there are many others in that range. All DVD burners can burn CD's as well.

Hi "ejazzkatt",

1.) Drives are not really computer operating specific usually, unless they specifically claim so. My LG did not claim to work in Linux, but it does. Amazon.com is a wonderful place to shop and they have a great return policy.

If you look at the results of your "inxi -Fxzd" command, you can see the HP drive optical1 supports "rw" and shows dvd entries, whereas the other drive optical2 has no dvd entries after the "rw".

Do you have a link to that drive we can look at?

2.) The two best DVD/CD applications are "K3b" and "xfburn" ...

Hope this helps ...

It's the drive listed at the top of the page.

Hi

If you can try with any iso below 700MB size:

Code: Select all

cdrecord -v -sao dev=/dev/sr0 isoimage.iso
The CD should not be mounted, for this command to work.

Hi "ejazzkatt",

I just quickly checked out (reviewed) your link to the optical drive that you purchased from Amazon.com. It looks like it might be deceptive advertising too me. The drive does not have DVD+-RW capabilities only reads and plays DVD's and can only write CD-RW discs, at least that is what is reported on your system. Yet it clearly shows DVD+-RW in its descriptions. I read a lot of the user comments as well, but none of the ones I read specifically claim they burned DVD discs only CD discs. Do you have any other computers you can try this drive with?

If it were me, I would return it and get another external USB DVD burner writer which can also burn CD discs, a different make and model. It might also be defective, so you can try another one from this seller.

Another Amazon.com link of external drives - check number sold, descriptions, user comments, etc...

Several things noticed.

It's a no name drive therefore I could not determine from the lsusb readout which was the drive, or could have given you a quirks mode to add to your grub boot line. However Brasero identifies it as Manufacturer: CMC Magnetics Corporation

Code: Select all

BraseroWodim stdout: Device seems to be: Generic mmc2 DVD-ROM.
BraseroWodim stdout: Current: 0x0009 (CD-R)
BraseroWodim stdout: Profile: 0x0010 (DVD-ROM)
BraseroWodim stdout: Profile: 0x0008 (CD-ROM)
BraseroWodim stdout: Profile: 0x0009 (CD-R) (current)
BraseroWodim stdout: Profile: 0x000A (CD-RW)
BraseroWodim stdout: Using generic SCSI-3/mmc CD-R/CD-RW driver (mmc_cdr).
BraseroWodim stdout: Driver flags : MMC-3 SWABAUDIO BURNFREE
BraseroWodim stdout: Supported modes: TAO PACKET SAO SAO/R96P SAO/R96R RAW/R16 RAW/R96P RAW/R96R

Code: Select all

driveropts=burnfree
-dao
you tried to burn it disk at once, but it only listed tao or track at once as being capable with that drive.

I agree with phd21 that the ad is deceptive.

Check that error reported by burner program.

Aha, found something here. It's the Initio as recounted in the lsusb reading. Notice the manufacturer ID is the same as this, but it reports Matshita

Hello,

I just bought an external DVD/Blueray burner; it seems to be a SATA drive in a random USB3 enclosure:
$ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 100: ID 13fd:3940 Initio Corporation
I have found reports on the Internet where the same device was used to house an external hard disk instead of an optical drive.

When I plug it in, no /dev/sr? is created; here is the output of dmesg:
[474014.857514] usb 1-1.4.2: new high-speed USB device number 100 using ci_hdrc
[474014.979497] usb 1-1.4.2: New USB device found, idVendor=13fd, idProduct=3940

[474015.979312] scsi 208:0:0:0: CD-ROM MATSHITA BD-MLT UJ260AF 1.00 PQ: 0 ANSI: 0
I would get a Sony, at least then you know it works.
All things go better with Mint. Mint julep, mint jelly, mint gum, candy mints, pillow mints, peppermint, chocolate mints, spearmint,....
