Another Sound Problem Question

Post by papagyo »

Hi All,

I am rather new to this Linux thing, but I seem to be having similar problems to a lot of other people here. I have a HP 1120NR netbook. Everything worked in version 6 including Firefox playing sound etc right out of the box. Went to RC1 knowing I may have a few problems and low and behold I have the same problem I had when I tried Ubuntu 9.04.

Problem is sound works perfectly playing videos and mp3's but as soon as you open Firefox (does not even need to be playing video or sound) the system sound goes dead. Close down Firefox and all works again. Same goes when starting Pulse Audio Device Chooser.....system sound goes dead until you close the app. Another strange thing it seems like some sort of sound application is running all the time because if you just run the mouse over an mp3 it plays..without opening any application. I have read every tutorial, tip and hack on both this site and Ubuntu. This is not a deal breaker for me as I do prefer this over any of the others and will be patient until someone comes up with a fix. I might add this was a totally fresh install with no updates done except this: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1046137 and this:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=789578. Any other suggestions would be more than welcome as I have other PC's and it does not matter if I hose the system and have to re-install. Thanks in advance.

Brian

This is sound preview (I know - preview :))
But I have actually not seen your problem before (but I don't see everything - imagine that :))
I can't imagine what can cause a conflict between Firefox and audio - I have to ask for help here
As you know we are quite busy now and you say there's no hurry so it may take a while before you get an answer
If you don't get an answer after a week or two just bump the topic - I have long forgotten it by then :)

Richard - do you think this will kill sound even if flash is not used - I'm not convinced....
And the solution you link to is not quite correct - nspluginwrapper is not used in Gloria RC1

my bad, I missed reading

I had the same problem, but mine went away with the first updates. Was this in the iso?

Hi Guys,

Even though I am pretty new to the Linux thing I have scoured the web for weeks and tried every trick out there suggested so far, even went so far as to re-install a few times to make sure it was a fresh install and it was nothing I messed up. I have since went back to Mint 6 and all works out of the box flash etc, with absolutely no tinkering. I did all updates after the install and it is still working as of today so I will stick with Mint 6 until I am sure that 7 will work the same way out of the box. Thanks guys.

Brian

Also if you need any more system specs let me know.
