[SOLVED] Adding 2 additional hdd's

Postby Rokkett » Mon Dec 04, 2017 7:08 pm

This might not technically be a newbie question, but I feel that it should not be causing me this much confusion; so it's making me feel like a noob :shock:

I have mint installed on my primary hdd (SATA2), and everything works beautifully (new to mint and LOVING it so far). I have installed in my desktop, 2 additional 2tb drives (SATA3 and SATA4 on the mobo, in case the placement matters). They were from a windows pc originally, so they were in ntfs format. Using gparted, I formatted the first one (sdb) with no data to ext4, and left the second one (sdc) as ntfs, until I could copy the data from it. I can mount them manually, which lasts until I reboot, at which time I have to do the process again. I want to have them permanently mounted, and added 2 line to the /etc/fstab file to do so (see below):

UUID=ABCD8675 /media/BU1 ext4 defaults 0 3
UUID=ABCD1234 /media/BU2 ntfs defaults 0 3

When I did this and restarted, the pc started in emergency mode. I had to comment out the 2 lines before I could reboot normally. What did I do wrong? Is there a step I'm missing?

Thanks a ton for the assistance!!

Lines in /etc/fstab comprise 6 fragments... VolumeID MountPoint FsType MountOptions DumpFlag Pass

I would expect your two extra drives to be specified something like this...

UUID=2487a804-a8fa-44c9-8e85-6b31b1e443d1 /media/BU1 ext4 defaults 0 2
UUID=28212486612C711F /media/BU2 ntfs defaults 0 2

o There must exist a volume matching VolumeID during boot or there's a 90 second delay.

o The MountPoint has to exist before the fstab is processed.

o Pass '3' doesn't mean anything https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fstab

o You can check you got it right using sudo mount -a to do a test run.

I see two problems. Both of those UUID are windows types, and you claimed one was formatted in linux ext4, so you need to find out that drive's new UUID. Also when using UUID, no need for path statement.
All things go better with Mint. Mint julep, mint jelly, mint gum, candy mints, pillow mints, peppermint, chocolate mints, spearmint,....

I would recommend using the following for the ntfs partition

UUID=28212486612C711F /media/BU2 ntfs-3g noatime,nls=utf8,windows_names,dmask=002,fmask=111,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 0

I'm still looking for those UUID suggested. Did this get split off some other thread? All I can see in the OP is two windows style UUID's.

They are just "...something like this..." examples...
This is what an ext4 UID looks like... 2487a804-a8fa-44c9-8e85-6b31b1e443d1
This is what an NTFS UID looks like... 28212486612C711F
This is what a FAT UID looks like... E291-E1A5
...none of which resemble the OP's examples.
echo "c 13 o 6 9 * p q" | dc

Mute Ant is correct, they are just examples i used, sorry for the confusion. After reading your excellent suggestions and updating my fstab file, I can now report success!
