I clicked shutdown and it took so long I had to force shutdown.

Press the escape key while shutting down, can you see at what stage the process hangs ?

How many seconds is "so long"? :?
By the way, on my company notebook shutdown usually switches off the notebook within less than 10 seconds. Yet, there are rare occasions when shutdown will be stuck on something for 2 minutes. So it is 10 seconds (>90%) vs. 2 min. (<10%) on my company notebook.
(Have not taken the time to follow Laurent85's advice, yet. )

Why? What's so bad about just letting it do its thing? Forcing shutdown can cause damage.

I had to crap and I didn't want to leave it on. How does a forced shut down hurt it? Seems like I left if for a few minutes. Normal shut down happens in seconds.

Which version of Mint? This version originally installed or upgraded from a previous version?
