I think I did something stupid, added PPAs to install app I wanted. Something is wrong with Firefox.
So, I was installing 2-3 application that needed extra PPAs. I did Google them to check if they seemed to be OK and not filled with malware...
However, I did notice that Firefox is acting a bit weird. When I click on Check spelling" and then try to choose language, it shows a list with a lot of languages.... 30-40 different languages that isn't even installed.
I did enter Synaptic and removed these PPAs and the applications I installed and updated the cache.
But there's also some feature in Synaptic called "Remove foreign packages.
It looks like this... What should I do? Downgrade?
Also, I only have these under languages addon manager: I have NOT installed South Africa... only the 2 others. I cant even choose to delete South Af.

Hi "Ax.",
It would help to know more about your system setup. If you run "inxi -Fxzd" from the console terminal prompt, highlight the results, copy and paste them back here, that should provide enough information.
Need more information, please tell us what 2-3 applications and their associated PPA's did you install?
Which version of Firefox are you using, and where did you click check spelling and see all these languages?
Hope this helps ...

Re: I think I did something stupid, added PPAs to install app I wanted. Something is wrong with Firefox.
Hello, thanks for trying to help me, I really appreciate that!
inxi -Fxzd:
Firefox: 57.0.1 (64-bit) - I have checked the extensions, addons and such and don't see anything unusual. I don’t use many plugins either, only the ones I really need.
About the spelling, if I rightclick in any textbox in the browser I can select "Check spelling". Once it's selected in the rightclick meny I can rightclick again and under "Check spelling" I can select a list with languages. Tons of languages I have not installed....
The applications I wanted to install was Telegram, BitlBee, libpurple, Electrum... Some of them needed extra stuff to install and I let it do it's thing. :/
And I have deleted the extra PPAs from Synaptic so I don't know which they were anymore.
I remember one, it was "ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8".
Maybe I should just try to uninstall Firefox and then install it again?
What about pressing that "Downgrade"-button in the first screenshot?

Re: I think I did something stupid, added PPAs to install app I wanted. Something is wrong with Firefox.
Hi "Ax."
You are welcome...
I do not see anything wrong with the results of the "inxi -Fxzd" console terminal command, so that is a good thing. You are using Linux Mint Mate 18.3 (brand new) 64-bit, with a Nvidia video card.
I am currently in the "Slimjet" browser, so when I get a chance to bring up my Firefox 57 Quantum (new version), I will check on that.
I would not "downgrade" anything or remove foreign packages, yet.
It would be really helpful if you can locate or remember the instructions you used for installing the applications and their PPA's, maybe check your browser history, or using the console terminal's "history" command.
"ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8" is an awesome PPA for many excellent Linux software packages and applications, utilities, etc... I always have this installed, and there is no need to remove it.
Why did you install "BitlBee" and "Electrum"? Telegram and libpurple are chat messenger related. There are various Telegram options available, including Opera browser's built-in one. What chat messenger application(s) do you want "libpurple" for?
Update: In FireFox (FF), click Edit, Preferences, General Tab (default), scroll down to "Languages", make sure "Check Spelling" is checked, click the "Choose" box to the right to add or remove languages. For some reason in my current FF57 the spelling option is not working which I think is because one or more of my add-ons is conflicting with that.
Also, clearing the FF caches and restarting Firefox may help, click Edit, Preferences, Privacy and Security on left, under History on right click "Clear your recent History" link, select time range of everything, check only "cache" (unless you want some other stuff cleared), click clear now. Under "Cached Web Content" click "Clear Now", close preferences tab, and restart firefox.
Hope this helps ...

Re: I think I did something stupid, added PPAs to install app I wanted. Something is wrong with Firefox.
Hi "Ax.",
I updated my last reply.
Another option is to use one of the add-on spell checkers, like the superb "Grammarly, or "LanguageTool" Grammer checker, and maybe disable Firefox's built-in spell checking. I use Grammarly, and I have not yet tried "LanguageTool" Grammer checker.
Grammarly

LanguageTool Grammar Checker

Re: I think I did something stupid, added PPAs to install app I wanted. Something is wrong with Firefox.
Hey every one! I'm back at my battle station.
inxi -r (I'm in Sweden)
Electrum
I needed to store coins locally, because of some rumours about the website that was holding them.
BitlBee
I tried to install the real Telegram client, but as soon as I type on the keyboard it just shuts down, no error msg.
Since I use Hexchat I figured out that I could use the Telegram protocol with it too, but I failed to get it working.
It's uninstalled now.
Languages & Spelling
As for the languages and the "Check Spelling", I have to enable "Check Spelling" every time, even when the box is checked in the settings.
I only have US-EN and Swedish Dictionaries and the same Languages activated, but look at this list I can choose from: Hehe, this is not such a big deal. It might be Firefox Quantum that just need some bug fixing since it's pretty new.
But I will try out the language addons as phd21 suggested.
Firefox extensions I've installed:
Lastpass, Reddit Enhancement Suite, uBlock Origin, Violent Monkey (Running my own scripts only)
I also cleared history, cookies, local data and every other thing I could and restarted Firefox.
One other thing, is it normal to have "127.0.1.1" as DNS server? I did Google this but it wasn't clear.
As always, thank you so much for all the help!

I use and like the Telegram plugin for Pidgin, maybe that's an option for you too?
If your issue is solved, kindly indicate that by editing the first post in the topic, and adding [SOLVED] to the title. Thanks!

Yes, I had that working but sometimes it disconnected for some reason.Moem wrote:I use and like the Telegram plugin for Pidgin, maybe that's an option for you too?
It seemed like other people had the same problem. But I can use the web client, it's good enough. Thanks for the suggestion.
