How to recover a deleted file? Please help.

Post by adam123456789 »

Hello everyone. I have 17.3. version. I have just deleted one file more than wanted from a few. It was normally in the home folder with a right mouse button, option 'delete' (so unfortunately not 'move to trash'). Files were really small, less than 1mb. I strongly need to undelete one of them. Beg you guys for help! ... Adam

While I haven't any experience with them, I've heard that PhotoRec and TestDisk are very helpful in this regard.

just a comment:

if you have done very much file manipulation since that happened, it is very likely that you won't be able to recover the file intact.

once a file is "deleted", the file manager marks the header "Deleted" but the data is still there, right where it was, fully intact....................... UNTIL

Another file is saved to the drive/memory.
That file will typically go to the first available space in memory/hard drive and over-write what was there before.

I also have not used any Linux file recovery apps, but have extensive experience in the Windows world as an IT support person.

You can try http://extundelete.sourceforge.net/

You should turn off your PC and boot with some Rescue Live distribution.

If you use SSD and Trim is on, then all rescue-able data can be lost if you let your PC on.

R-Linux is easy to use and it finds also deleted files.
