Mounting a NTFS fromatted external hard drive question

Postby rivers79 » Mon May 18, 2009 7:51 am

I have an NFTS formatted external hard drive which Mint does not seem to reconize.

When I boot it up I get the error:

"Cannot mount volume. Unable to mount the volume 'EXTRNL BX'"

I formatted with a Windows machine.

How do you mount this in Mint?

Thanks.

Reconnect it to a Windows machine, remove it via "Safely Remove Hardware" as soon as you can, before Windows sinks its fangs in, then connect to your Linux machine and it should mount automatically. Worked for me anyway. :)

There is a way to force the mount. Depending on which number and letter your drive is, one can use

Code: Select all

sudo mount -o force /dev/sd** /mnt
where the two stars are the letter and number of the drive. If you don't know the letter and number, go into the terminal and type

Code: Select all

sudo fdisk -l
and you will get a list of drives. Post that information here and we can help you more. It will probably be something like /dev/sdb1

It worked. Thank you.

I mounted the device as you mentioned and turned it off and turned it back on and now I can access it.

Cheers.

Glad to help. I've never understood what Windows does to contaminate hardware in such a way. It's enough to make one paranoid.

After working in a computer store for 4 months and seeing what Microsoft dose to computers, this is the reason I am moving away from Windows.

Cheers.
