[SOLVED] Strange occurrence on Desktop

Post by Qwazert » Thu Dec 21, 2017 12:55 am

I have an HPZ400 (older model) and a nVidia card.
I've noticed something wierd happening lately...it's as if I have TWO desktops, superimposed on each other. There is no single app that causes this to happen, I've noticed it when using Chrome, OpenShot, etc.

If I go to the desktop and try to open my HOME directory (for instance) I can see it hiding behind the desktop. At first I though it was because I was using some third-party wallpaper, but even if I used the provided backgrounds, this will still happen.
If I decide to reboot the machine, the shutdown dialogue will appear, but again...it is barely visible BEHIND the desktop..I am hoping there is an easy fix for this because it IS a deal-breaker.

Thanks!

Please post the output of this terminal command:

NVIDIA GeForce 210
On a related note...I did upgrade the nVidia drivers but found there was no end of other problems with the newer version...had to roll back to original.

I guess I should also add that this doesn't happen CONSTANTLY...when it does, it's as if a second Desktop opens up as the offending app starts.
Then, when I close the app and try to access anything else, it's hidden behind the "new" Desktop...

Hope this makes sense.......

I have disabled all effects as directed...now I just have to wait and see if the problem recurs.

This happens to me as well with the same distro and desktop -- but only when I hover the mouse pointer over the Show Desktop icon next to the Menu button on the task bar. All windows become 90% transparent.

I think that is what it should be doing. Maybe your Show Desktop icon thinks the mouse is always over it, or the effect is sticking when you move the mouse to the menu button, passing over the Show Desktop icon.

You can right-click the Show Desktop icon and select "Configure...". If the problem recurs, or if you want other effects but not this one, you can turn it off in the dialog that appears by turning the "Peek at desktop on hover" to OFF.

Looks like this has solved the problem...I have been using Mint exclusively for the past few days and the problem has not returned.
