Re: No sound through HDMI..

Post by rarsa »

Was there ever a solution for this? I am having what seems to be exactly the same problem:
Multiboot
  • HDMI works on Mint 18.3 (and has worked in every version for years)
No HDMI device in the System Audio settings
If I run the Pulse Audio Volume Control, I can see the the HDMI port but "unplugged"
    If I run the commands

    Code: Select all

    lspci

    Code: Select all

    aplay
    and

    Code: Select all

    inxi
    I can see the device
If I run the speaker test, I can hear the sound.

    Code: Select all

    speaker-test --channels 2 --rate 48000 --device hw:1,3
I have tried changing the boot parameter to force audio.radeon=1 to no effect
This is the only issue holding me from upgrading from 18.3 to 19. It is not urgent as I still have until 18 runs out of support but I'd like to have a solution before that.

Code: Select all

uname -a
Linux xxxx 5.0.0-32-generic #34~18.04.2-Ubuntu SMP Thu Oct 10 10:36:02 UTC 2019 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Thanks for any help

Hi rarsa,

See if this post helps sort it out for you. Obviously, you'll need to change the hw: numbers.

Unfortunately, the result was even worst. After I added that line not even the built in audio devices showed up.

Any other ideas?

Okay, run this on the affected install and post the output:

Code: Select all

curl https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pulseaudio/pulseaudio/raw/master/src/utils/pa-info?inline=false | bash | nc termbin.com 9999

Done:

Output in

Code: Select all

https://termbin.com/k8r6
At first blush and not knowing what I'm looking for, the HDMI interface is recognized as sink 0

Thanks for having a look

Just wanted to double check; You did use hw:1,3 correct? If you just copied the line, hw:0,2 was not the proper device for your case.

I'm looking through the output now.

I do see all the HDMI options say Not Available. Does speaker-test --channels 2 --rate 48000 --device hw:1,3 actually still work?

Yes, with that command, I hear the sound properly (left and right). But other than that, nothing else works.

Code: Select all

speaker-test --channels 2 --rate 48000 --device hw:1,3

speaker-test 1.1.3

Playback device is hw:1,3
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)
Buffer size range from 64 to 16384
Period size range from 32 to 8192
Using max buffer size 16384
Periods = 4
was set period_size = 4096
was set buffer_size = 16384
 0 - Front Left
 1 - Front Right
Time per period = 5.643980

Okay, let's try one more time just in case. In the terminal enter xed admin:///etc/pulse/default.pa and when the file opens scroll to the bottom and add this new line:

Code: Select all

load-module module-alsa-sink device=hw:1,3
Save and close the file, ignore any terminal warnings then run pulseaudio -k in the terminal.

You might want to install and run PulseAudio Volume Control (pavucontrol) as you can switch the output to the new sink on the Playback tab while sound is playing. Then sink name is created automatically, but I'd assume it'll have HDMI in it, although it may not.

Thanks,

I had already tried that but as I mentioned before, the result was worst, all the sinks disappear: See attached screenshot. Note: I tried it now again with the same result. All sinks disappear from the sound settings

Also, if you see the screenshot in my previous message, I have pavucontrol installed and that's where I see the HDMI Unplugged.

I'm realizing I revived this thread in "newbie Questions, Not that I'm a newbie but the symptoms seemed very similar. It seems it is not a newby issue

I think I should have posted to Hardware support. I will move my question there.
I am also suspecting that the problem is with the Kernel based on other similar posts around the web.

Here is my question on "Hardware Support"

Thanks.
