[SOLVED] Cinnamon crashing after login

Post by Becka » Wed Jan 17, 2018 10:21 pm

I just installed Mint yesterday. Super green here. Updated today and now when I login, I get the error that Cinnamon has crashed and in Fall back mode. Not sure what all you need to know to help. It ran fine all day until I restarted. I have restarted a couple times to see if that would fix it but no luck.

Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon 64 is the one I downloaded.

Crash Report:

Thanks for the help. Want to pull my hair out.

Are you running any custom application on startup?

I have only installed Chrome, Atom, and Slack. Don't think they run on startup.

Create a new user account. Is it crashing there, too?

Hi Becka, welcome to the forum.

Unfortunately I don't know what your problem is but it looks like Thread 1 has tanked for some reason. I'm guessing your running a new 6 core (12 thread) cpu, but to be sure and to give more info please post the terminal output from:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
Hopefully this information will help others help you.

I suspect that you might have better luck with MATE or xfce rather than Cinnamon on the old machine.
If you really want to stick with Cinnamon, you might try Mint 18.1 or 18.2 - or even 17.3
The different graphics stacks in the older Mint versions might work better for you.

Well, I guess my 12 threads guess was a little off!

austin.texas has sound advice, by just to be curious, do you recall if one of your updates was mesa?

Code: Select all

apt policy libgles2-mesa
should tell you the installed version and any update candidate.

I see other threads about cinnamon crashing and only running in fall-back mode after some current updates.

Output for the mesa thing:
libgles2-mesa:
Installed: 17.2.4-0ubuntu1~16.04.4
Candidate: 17.2.4-0ubuntu1~16.04.4
Version table:
*** 17.2.4-0ubuntu1~16.04.4 500
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial-updates/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
11.2.0-1ubuntu2 500
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial/main amd64 Packages

I figured if this couldn't be resolved, I would go to Mate. Although, lol, I'm not sure how to go about that. Seen some people say you just need to install Mate and some have said to do the full install of Mint with Mate. Idk.

Thanks again for helping me out. I appreciate it so much.

A fresh new install of MATE would be the only reasonable strategy. Installing more than one Desktop to the same Mint as Cinnamon can cause some problems and/or conflicts.

The mesa package update was on Jan 17 and is a level4 update (Sensitive) and I don't recall it being a security update.
There are at least 11 mesa packages updated (different libraries and such) and I don't know of an easy way to downgrade or even if it is the culprit.
You might want to think about not installing level 4 updates without a good recovery plan (like timeshift).

Sorry I couldn't bring any good news.

That's alright. I still appreciate the help you guys have given me. Looks like I am off to get Mate but will for sure be setting up Timeshift before I update anything. I didn't find out about Timeshift until after the issues.

Again, thanks so much.
