X server fails to boot after kernel update to 4.4

Post by Pelsjager » Thu Jan 18, 2018 6:29 am

Following viewtopic.php?f=90&t=261343, I updated my kernel from 3.19.0-32 to 4.4.0-109. The update went fine, but when booting the new kernel, it fails to get to the login screen, and after a few tries, says that Xserver failed to boot with: AddScreen/ScreenInit failed for gpu driver 1 -1 . It then boots to a terminal screen, which has the following error: failed to execute '/bin/sytemctl' '/bin/systemctl stop --no-block nvidia-persistenced. It probably has something to do with the nvidia (384.111) drivers, because it does boot when switching to the nouveau driver. Booting the old kernel works fine. Purging and re-installing the nvidia-384 drivers didn't make a difference.

What's the best course of action here? Fix this, or try the older 3.13.0-139 kernel?

Some hopefully relevant inxi -Fxz output:

Installing 3.13.0-139 isn't the solution apparently, since that just boots to a blank black screen, without any error messages. Any ideas?

Try Mint 18.3.

Mint 17.* doesn't use systemd, which includes the systemctl command mentioned in the output. The installer going on behind the scenes during the upgrade did not account for this. I'm sure this is why you're running into issues. So as suggested above, I'd say go up to Mint 18.3. I guess a workaround would be to do away with the nVidia driver and just use the open-source alternative. OR, you could try removing the nVidia driver, then installing the update, and then installing the nVidia driver back again.

Alright, good to know what is going on. Removing the nvidia driver and reinstalling the kernel didn't change anything; the same x server fail happens. I'll just upgrade to 18.3, thanks!

<Just expressing my confusion>

Not that it helps, but I wonder what actually pulled in dependencies on the non-existent systemd?
On Ubuntu 14.04.5, which is the basis of Mint 17.x, I switched to kernel series 4.4.0-xx a year ago, because Skylake processors will not work with kernel 3.13.0-xx. It will not even boot.
Upgrading to kernel 4.4.0-109 has not made my Ubuntu 14.04.5 try to use non-existent systemd components in any way.

I admit the Skylake machine has got an Intel graphics chip. And the old machines with some (almost) legacy Nvidia cards here all use the nouveau drivers.
