My PC has an Intel cpu but I've noticed when I update stuff using Update Manager it seems to download/unpack an amd64.deb files? What is up with that? Perhaps I'm just showing my LM ignorance? :? :?

AMD created the 64 bit instruction set extensions to the (32 bit) x86 processor architecture. It's also named x86-64 or Intel 64. As AMD created it and was the first the ship processors with it, amd64 is commonly used on Linux to indicate code meant for 64 bit x86-64 processors—both from AMD and Intel.
