Hi,
When I run Linux from a Live-DVD or when it is freshly installed, before I change the sleep and hibernate options, the computer locks me out. How do I wake up the system from leaving the computer on or closing a laptop lid? I usually have to restart or shut-down. Sometimes the options to stop that reset themselves.
It does not ask for a password, the screen is blank. And on the Live-DVD I do not know what the password is.
Thanks.

Re: Linux keeps hibernating or sleeping.
Neither in the live system nor with the default settings of a fresh system the system does automatically suspend or hibernate. So there must be something else. Does the system crash? But most importantly:
What is your version of Mint and what is the desktop environment? If you don't know open a terminal and enter:

System: Host: Kernel: 4.13.0-26-generic x86_64 (64 bit)
Desktop: Cinnamon 3.4.6 Distro: Linux Mint 18.2 Sonya
When the laptop lid closes the screen goes black and pressing keys, the space bar or moving the mouse does nothing.
When going into the Preferences - Power Management area, this problem is alleviated.

Re: Linux keeps hibernating or sleeping.
I understood your first sentence in the starting post, as if the computer would suspend or hibernate out of its own - and this should not happen with the default settings. Of course if you close the lid it will suspend, as you requested this with the default settings. But definitely it will not hibernate with this. So far I cannot follow your description.SyncroScales wrote:When the laptop lid closes the screen goes black
Please elaborate about this.SyncroScales wrote:When going into the Preferences - Power Management area, this problem is alleviated.
Do you use the internal keyboard of the laptop?

Re: Linux keeps hibernating or sleeping.
I think the problem is suspend. How to get out of it and back onto the desktop?
I am using the keyboard attached to the laptop.
Preferences - Power Management area
Suspend when inactive (Never, Never) and When the lid is closed (Do Nothing, Do Nothing)
Why are the settings different than wha tI had to change them to when I install Linux Mint Cinnamon? If I forget to change these settings, how do I get back to the desktop instead of having th shut down and restart?
When using a Live-DVD, It might ask for a password and user name, what are these?

Open a terminal and enter:
So I cannot follow, that you have to change the first setting.
sudo pm-suspend
. What happens?Do you say, that the computer suspends anyway?SyncroScales wrote:Preferences - Power Management area

The default settings are to not suspend when inactive (there should be no need to change that) and to suspend when the lid is closed: The reason for the latter setting is, that a laptop with closed lid will likely overhead, when it is anyway fully working. Danger for hardware damage.SyncroScales wrote:Why are the settings different than wha tI had to change them to when I install Linux Mint Cinnamon?

Thank you. I will try this later if I need to.Cosmo. wrote:Open a terminal and enter:sudo pm-suspend

The power button light goes off and the computer does not respond. I had to restart my laptop.

The default settings are what I put in this post, I had to manually shuf them off with the Live-DVD and once install happens. I noticed that sometimes there can be updates which seem to reset the settings to what I have complained about.
So I cannot follow, that you have to change the first setting.

The other thing is, how do I get the computer out of Suspend and to respond if it is in Suspend? Or Hibernation?

Re: Linux keeps hibernating or sleeping.
Usually for ending suspend the key press on any key should do this. For coming from hibernate state you have to power on the machine as it would be really shut down.
