How To Get Old Recording App & Frozen Cursor Questions
A couple questions...
First - I remember a great little single track recording app that used to be built into Linux. I want to say it was there up to around version 12. Does anyone know whether it's available to get it back somehow?
Second question - Lately, my cursor seems to freeze, causing me to have to reboot. I'm completely updated, but if this is a bug, I guess it hasn't been fixed. Any thoughts on that? Do you need to know anything more from me to answer this one?
Thanks,
Dennis

It was a little single track audio recorder that was built into the OS. If I recall, it saved as an mp3. It was just really handy for rough drafts and little demos of songs I would do with some friends. It's lacking in the last 2-3 new versions of Linux.

Re: How To Get Old Recording App & Frozen Cursor Questions
Hi "Dennis12805",
I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.
1.) There are a few really good audio (& video) recording applications including Audacity (audio editor) and "Audio Recorder". Recording from what source(s)? The superb desktop recording application "Simple Screen Recorder" (SSR) could do this.
Awesome "Audio Recorder" to record anything audio related on your computer.
Linux Mint 18
Linux Mint 17.x or earlier
2.) You say your mouse is freezing? What make and model of mouse, and how is it connected? Perhaps updating the Linux Kernel using the Mint Update Manager to a newer version might help with that (always reboot afterward). If it is cordless, make sure its batteries are charged, and the receiver is not too far away, or close to sources of interference.
Hope this helps ...

Re: How To Get Old Recording App & Frozen Cursor Questions
You can always use
Regarding the mouse issue, have you noticed this happening after updating at some point? A kernel update could certainly cause hardware issues. Have you tried another mouse to be sure it's not just the mouse itself?
parec
, which is part of Pulse Audio; is that what you were thinking of? It can output in various formats; use the parec --list-file-formats
command to see what it supports, and you can use one with the --file-format=FORMAT
argument. Or just look at man parec
. I couldn't see one for MP3, but it's no biggy, as ffmpeg
can easily convert to MP3, if that's what you're specifically after. If it's a GUI program you're after... no idea. Oh wait, could it have been the gnome-sound-recorder? Look for that package, as it might be what you thinking of.Regarding the mouse issue, have you noticed this happening after updating at some point? Like I said, it's the touchpad...Termy wrote: Regarding the mouse issue, have you noticed this happening after updating at some point? A kernel update could certainly cause hardware issues. Have you tried another mouse to be sure it's not just the mouse itself?
It's been going on, sort of frequently some days and infrequently other days with no rhyme or reason. I honestly didn't pay so much attention that I could tell you it started after a specific update. Every time I see the little shield icon go blue, I update, so I do it quite a lot.
Sometimes, if I left click and hold it, I can move the cursor. Sometimes not. Sometimes if I just wait long enough, the cursor control returns, sometimes not.
Re: How To Get Old Recording App & Frozen Cursor Questions
Hi Dennis,
That's funny, I get asked that every now and then. When anyone clicks the reply button to a post it automatically puts quotes around your Linux Mint username, so I just use that.
There are Touchpad settings available in the System Setting Menu you can adjust that may help with that.
