[Solved] Unable to mount Blank CD-R Disc

Post by 72Cuda » Sun Jan 21, 2018 6:51 pm

I installed Mint 18.3 Mate. I have not tampered with any settings. When I insert a cd, I get this message "Unable to mount Blank CD-R Disc. Location already mounted". I am guessing that is why when I right click on a file, I do not get the write to disk option. Is there a setting that needs to be changed?

"Unable to mount Blank CD-R" is just normal. Linux can only mount a file-system and a Blank CD-R is... blank. I have never understood the "Location is already Mounted" part.

If you are aiming to use a CD-R as a write-once-read-many (WORM) drive, MATE hasn't got that as a desktop function. In fact I have never seen a Linux Desktop offering multi-session writes. The whole idea is a bit old-fashioned now silicon storage is a similar price and performance, so you may never see it.

Some DVD drives are extra-smart... I think it's the ones that can handle DVD-RAM. The limited evidence so far is that they can find and re-write individual sectors of a DVD-RW disk too. Imagine my surprise when gparted successfully 'repaired' the MBR of my Mint DVD-RW.
Data stored in an encrypted volume will only be accessible with the original password. Without this key, all the data will remain scrambled beyond hope of recovery.

I kept searching for answers and came across similar responses. Those said to ignore it. However, trying to solve the not able to write to disk, I cannot find the answer. After I click okay to Unable to mount Blank CD-R Disc". I see the menu option "You have just inserted a blank CD. Chose the application to launch". The options are greyed out. It just says "No applications found". My understanding is that in Mate's file manager, I can click on a file and choose "Write to disk". That option does not appear. When I go to Applications, System Tools...cd/creator is not there. Its as if no burner tool was installed.

Many here recommend using a tool called xfburn from the repositories.
You can get this with Software Manager, Synaptic Package Manager, or via terminal:

Code: Select all

apt install xfburn
You can see how your optical drive is being reported to your system by terminal command:

Code: Select all

cdrecord -prcap
