How do I choose the right USB WiFi Adapter?

Post by Arkwright » Tue Jan 23, 2018 2:16 pm

Hi, I just installed LinuxMint alongside Windows 7. I found a spare USB WiFi adapter (a TP-Link TL-WN822N), but it seems to support Windows only. (Description on box Windows only, and CD only has what looks like Win drivers). I see that catalogue product descriptions generally include whether an adapter supports Windows, Linux or both, but I wonder - is there anything else I would be wise to look out for in the adapter description regarding Linux, or is inclusion of the word "Linux" enough for most purposes?

Many thanks for your help!

Linux generally does not require drivers other than those included in the kernel. In the spec's for this device it says Linux 2.6.18 - 3.10.10. I assume that refers to the kernels available at the time. If it was ever supported by the Linux kernel it will probably still be. I would assume that the device would work, have you tried it?

Hello Arkwright and Welcome to Linux Mint Forum,

That USB dongle should work ok. Here is an Ask Ubuntu page that tells you how to install the driver. https://askubuntu.com/questions/625987/ ... -on-ubuntu
Use the second one.
good luck.

P.S. if you can't get it going here a site that has several that will work.

Many thanks - I'll do that. In fact I just found that TP-Link do offer a Linux driver for that model and downloaded it. I'll follow your link instructions. Many thanks for your help!
