Install systemd? (I know, really n00b) [SOLVED]

Post by cecilieaux »

Upgrade is offering systemd. I am vaguely aware of the controversy about this but I do NOT understand the technical aspects. I am just a little frightened that I am being asked to install and download this.

Should I do it anyway? Will everything stop working? Kind and simple answers only, please.

systemd is the init-system Debian, Ubuntu, and, thus, Linux Mint uses. It is already installed - the Update Manager offers an Update on this. It should be Level 4, marking it as critical system component. However, in most cases you can safely install the update :)

If you're running 18.3, as in your signature, you already have systemd.

Not really. Mint 17.x uses upstart, Mint debian edition sysvinit (IIRC). They both have parts of systemd, but don't use it to boot like Mint 18.x does.

If you don't already have it, something is very weird - or you're not running Mint 18.x. You're no doubt getting an upgrade to a package, not an install.

Try this first:

Code: Select all

dpkg -l systemd
