Is Linux Mint based on Ubuntu or Debian? (solved.)

Post by Wompoo »

Can someone clarify this for me please.
This qTox download site, appears to draw a distinction between the two - Ubuntu and Debian.
I am not sure which to choose.

If you are using Mint 18.x then your Mint is based on Ubuntu Xenial, and that's what you need to download packages for.

If you're using some other verion, then please post the output of this terminal command:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
Enclose the results in code markers, which you can select from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply.

yes, Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu
There is a lesser know version called LMDE that is actually based of Debian

we could go on and on for ages about the differences between Ubuntu and Debian, and the pros and cons of both.
It is best t sum it up as the differences are Huge.

(I am a Debian user now after several years of being a LMDE user)

Actually, the answer is "yes".

LM is a direct descendant of Ubuntu, however Ubuntu is a technological "child" of Debian via the .deb packaging methodology.

There are other similarities, as well as differences.

You're most welcome.

You're using 17.3, so you need to download packages for Ubuntu Trusty or 14.04.

Cheers.

Because Mint 17.x is based on Ubuntu 14.04 "Trusty." If you try to install packages for say, Ubuntu 16, you run a risk of trashing your system. On your other system running Mint 18, you want Ubuntu 16.04/Xenial packages.
